rg8043 Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I am new and need some help. I have set the dns so that I can go to the web and view my domain. When I go to the domain I am presented with 5 directories. parent,private,cig-bin, images and post info.html. First, what are the signficance of these directories, and is there a way to "turn off" my website so that no one else can visit it until it is finished? I read that the preferred method to upload files to the website was to use fantastico. I clicked on it, and it took me to the smf forum and I was presented with the option of using the webinstaller. I was under the impression that fantistico would install the smf database? If so, I could not figure out how to do this when I used the control panel. The webinstaller asked me to install the program into the directory that I want my forum to be located in, which is the preferred directory for this install? Thank you again for all your help. Rob G. TCH-Thomas Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 To see something else than those directories you mention, an upload of a new index.htm file should do the trick. It can be a blank page or with what ever text you choose as long it is called index.htm and uploaded to the public_html directory. The preferred way to upload files to your webspace is either with an ftp program or through cPanels file manager and not fantastico. Fantastico is only a library of webinstallers for differennt scripts such as the SMF forum and a lot of others. Fantastico itself can not upload or install any other files than those it have in the library. The preferred directory for a forum is up to you, but I would personally put it in a subfolder and not directly in the public_html if my forum is not supposed to be public right away. Quote
TCH-Don Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 When using fantastico it will create and connect to a database for you just follow the instructions and fill in the folder you wish to install to an admin name and password and that's about it. You can install more than one copy of a script to different folders. If you want a forum, install two forums one for the public and one to play with or try mods and upgrades on first. Quote
