Guest Cindy Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I added some Microsoft Word documents to my site that I'd like users to be able to open and print. Before opening, users are prompted for a network userid and password for authenication. I checked the read/write/execute attributes for the documents, and believe they are correct. How can I stop this prompt? Note that when users cancel the prompt, the file still opens. Would you recommend converting this documents into html? Quote
SEO Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 How about PDF? HTML would work too (and an easy conversion), but pdf would be easier for the user. Quote
shammer Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I just had to do this today and there was no problem. I just placed it in public_html and gave the guy the url to the doc. Quote
Guest Cindy Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I do have pdf files on the website, and they don't prompt for userid/password when opened. These files were given to me to post. I guess that I'll convert my Word documents to html since I don't have the tools to create pdfs, but I'm still real curious why I get prompted for userid/password just for Word documents. Quote

borfast Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Thanks for the link, Lianna. Nice app! Didn't know it Quote
Lianna Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Yep! I use it at least 3 times a week. Beats the hundreds of dollars that Adobe wants and with quite satisfactory results. Li Quote
KevinW Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I have used PDF995 successfully in creating documents that are going to a printer for prepartion of a printed catalog. The way it works is that PDF995 is listed as a printer! So anything you can print, can be used to create a PDF document. One thing worth noting: if you are working with graphics, and want really a really good resolution when converting into PDF format, select the PDF995 as your printer, then select preferences, then select advanced, and change (increase) your graphics quality from the default 300dpi. You can go as high as 2540dpi! Finally, if you have a need to merge several different documents (say a Word file, an Excel file, and other things) into a single PDF document, there is an add on module to PDF995 caled PDFEDIT995 which will let you do exactly that! kw Quote
