Kaula Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Can anyone give me a list of possible reasons why IE 6 on Xp home might hang when visiting websites. I'm having to resubmit and refresh pages to get them to load. No viruses or spyware on the machine. Steps already tried: all defaults loaded, ipconfig /flushdns, restored IE 6 from add/remove, reset tcp/ip protocols. Still hangs when browsing. Any more solutions to try or reasons why I might be encountering this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Its a new dell inspirion(sp?) laptop with wireless nic if that means anything.
bellringr Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 This may be a silly question, but has your ISP been having issues?
TCH-Bruce Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Have you tried another browser like Firefox, Firebird, Netscape or Opera? Do they hang? Are you losing your wireless connection?
Kaula Posted March 28, 2004 Author Posted March 28, 2004 Thanks so much for the responses as I am looking forward to resolving this as soon as possible. The lan we are using, the other three computers including another wireless laptop has had no problems at all and the signal str and on the said laptop.. it shows as high. I've tried the simplist things first like dl a 50meg file from the internet (hehe i was watching modern marvels on the history channel) and transfering several large files over the lan without any problems. Being as it is, I'm pretty partial to something being corrupted with the browser, since i cant recreate the problem. Havnt tried to use another web browser, mainly because its not my computer (sisters, and I'd hate to do anthying that might comprimise*sp?* her system). Normally I'd just say keep clickin that buttin' sis, but shes sending duplicate emails from web mail sites and when purchasing online shes having to resubmit her orders and its charging her serveral times. Please keep the help coming!
Madmanmcp Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Things to check...what other programs or processes are running. The system could be busy with other things, do a ctrl-alt-del and see whats running. A virus scanner could be slowing you down. try terminating things to see if it frees the browser up. How much disk space do you have left free? If you are running real low the system will bog down trying to shuffle around your swap space to make room for new data. Do a couple traceroutes on the sites you have problems with, maybe its an ISP issue. What else is going on in the house on the network. On a network bandwidth is shared, and when other computers are downloading 50MB files it will slow down everyone else on the network.
Madmanmcp Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Just noticed you mentioned laptop and the signal strength was high, you may have a network card problem. Bring the laptop next to the router to see if the issue remains, if it clears you have a location problem. Do you have another card you can try in its place?
DarqFlare Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 I've had problems with that using IE. Try clearing out the browser's cache. If it hangs while doing that, create a new administrator and go into your other account's Docs & Settings, and delete the index.dat file in the Temporary Internet Files to clear out the cache.
Deverill Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 Robert has some great suggestions and I have seen the same thing. Also, if you go to, say, Yahoo.com and hit a bunch of refreshes or their pages does it hang or is it only on certain sites, or certain types of sites such as ecommerce, that it happens?
Kaula Posted March 29, 2004 Author Posted March 29, 2004 i cant recreate the problem when i have the cat5 plugged into it this is not good news for me
RJSkon Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 Kaula Not saying that this is your problem, but I had a similar experience With Windows ME and IE 6 a few weeks ago. I purchased Turbo Tax and received Norton Professional with a super rebate package, I loaded Norton in and started to have a problem with IE 6 hanging up. I uninstalled Norton Professional and exchanged it for just plain Norton AntiVirus, which didn't have the Norton Firewall and other stuff, everything is now back to normal and running fine. Richard
Madmanmcp Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 i cant recreate the problem when i have the cat5 plugged into it this is not good news for me Well this narrows it down. Do you have another wireless card to test with to see if its the card. Did you move the laptop to different locations to see if its the location of the laptop versus the card itself. If using a hardwire works...problem is solved
Kaula Posted March 30, 2004 Author Posted March 30, 2004 i talked to a few other guys with the same laptop and integrated wireless adapter and they too have had the same problem. good thing i have an extra wireless card i can slap in her. i dont like dell anymore
Madmanmcp Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Let us know if a different wireless card corrects the issue.
Kaula Posted April 1, 2004 Author Posted April 1, 2004 Sadly enough, the old d-link wireless pcmcia(sp?) works fine, i browsed with it for 20 minutes with no problems and then i had my mom browse around for another 40 while i was fixing one of their computers. not a single hangup. i wonder if its worth calling dell and asking them how to fix it. just really sucks having this card sticking out an inch when its already supposed to have an integrated card.
Madmanmcp Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 Ok, you found the culprit and came up with a solution and now you also have some nagging questions, isn't computing fun? First thing I would do is check the Dell website and see if there are driver updates available for your Laptop. Maybe they have heard of this problem and posted a driver to fix it. Next how old is the laptop, is it still under warranty? If it is you could concider getting it fixed for free...but this would involve mailling it in and being without it for a period of time.
kaseytraeger Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 Also, if you go to, say, Yahoo.com and hit a bunch of refreshes or their pages does it hang or is it only on certain sites, or certain types of sites such as ecommerce, that it happens? I've had problems with Yahoo hanging on me this whole week, no matter which of the three computers I use (all using different Internet access lines) or which browser I use (IE6, Firefox0.8 or Netscape7). Typically, I try to log it, retrieve email, or just look at my MyYahoo page, but it hangs on me. Sometimes hitting refresh works, but other times, it keeps hanging.
oneandonly Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Yes, to delete the google toolbar. It works for me. Ciao
TCH-Bruce Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Welcome to the forums oneandonly I'm pretty sure this is a resolved issue since the thread is over a year old.
