jdeatsch Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Good day folks, I've just been told by my DSL provider that they will no longer be providing binary newsgroup content. This is an inept company for sure, but the only DSL game in town (please don't tell me about cable, I was one of their victims for 5 1/2 years and beta at that). TCH, perhaps you can supply this service, at an additional cost of course, but kill two ornithoptors with one piece of basalt. Thoughts, you Gurus of Bandwidth? btw, I've NEVER been happier with a service, of any kind, than I have with TCH. You guys (and gals) truly DO rock andthassafact! Jim Quote
Madmanmcp Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Hi Jim, TCH is a Web Hosting company and provides space and servers for web sites. News Groups is a "service" provided by an ISP or "Internet Service Provider". This would involve setting up dedicated servers and the software for these servers, large amounts of disk space and bandwidth and a few admins to run and keep them running. I don't think it would be cost effective for TCH to try and supply this to its members. But I am not the expert here so we'll wait to see what the TCH guys say. I do know there are other services out there that supply access to their servers for a small monthly fee. Let me take a look around some of my notes and see if I can find you some names. Quote
youneverknow Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 You can get free news server access at http://teranews.com their sign up fee is $3.95 US (one time processing fee) and they will let you post to groups also. They have all the groups and their only limit is 50mb downloaded per day. youneverknow Quote
TCH-Don Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 You could just use google http://groups.google.com/ from anywhere. Quote
Guest LightKeeper Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 I never could get the hang of newsgroups... Quote
jdeatsch Posted March 5, 2004 Author Posted March 5, 2004 Wow, once again you folks exceed my expectations. Many thanks to you one and all for the help. I'll just wander off and continue to gabble about my mediocre ISP. Broadband is rather limited here in Rawchester, Neu Yawk. RR or the phone companies aDSL is all you get (bird excluded on accunta exhorbitant cost). One day they will have competition other than each other. Jim Quote

I have a dial-up and love their newsgroups service, they will add groups for members after 7 days if the group is valid. However if your not interested or able to switch ISP's there are several pay for news services like giganews that are not to costly. Goggle does not carry the bin groups AFAIK, I use teranews as a backup and it works fairly well. Verizon also has internal newsgroups for members and the server/newsadmins will post replies.......they also have a flame group where posts are sent if the posters get carried away and a general discussion group and server groups for ADSL, security and other tech type stuff. Anyway I started with MSN for 3 years and dumped them when they went to online communities, went to Earthkink another 3 years and was not happy with there news servers or customer no service.....as to newsgroups so switched to Verizon about a year ago and have been very happy. Yes newsgroups access is very important to me Quote
