Ok, here is the thing.

I currently use Dial-up, but I have been getting a MONSTER Connection!

I am talking about 26.4 kbs!

One thing I can not stand is going SLOW, I am looking into DSL, which I have been looking around alot lately for DSL, the problem is, that I live WAY out in the country.

I found a DSL Service that I passed all the tests with flying colors.

My System Info is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 - Service Pack 1

Registered to me.

W2047, AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 1.66GHz, 624 MB of RAM.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now to get to the question, plain and simple, does $599.99 sound good for the Hardware for DSL? I guess it is a opinion type question, but if that is too high for DSL Hardware then I don't want to jump in head first and get cheated out of money.

Anyone who has DSL, your input would be very helpfull.

Thanks,

Where are you located? You shouldn't buy your own dsl modem & filters. Typically, the DSL company would let you borrow their hardware for free. It's also common to have a trial period where you can get your money back.

I've heard that dsl connection speed is related to how far you are from the provider's service center. The farther, the slower. But anything is better than dial-up. I used to have Verizon DSL but I changed to Optimum cable since it's noticably faster (but more expensive).

$600 for hardware and filters? With who?

I have an SBC DSL connection, the modem was $99 (waived fee) and all filters were free. So there was no hardware charge for this installation. Of course I live in a metropolitan city.

WOAH!

NOWAY!

Not sure who you are looking at but I would head straight for the exit and look elsewhere. You can get 2.5Ghz EMachine with a monitor and a printer for that much!

If DSL is not in your "neck of the woods", look into Satellite. I know some friends who use Starband. www.starband.com

If you live that far outside of town $599 actually might not be that bad, DSL availabilty depends on how far you are away from the CO (central office, which isnt really an office but a switching station) Most ISP's wont or cant provide DSL if you are more than 17,500 feet from the CO, but SOME providers have whats called "reach DSL" that is available no matter how far from the CO you are, but it is considerably more expensive because it is basicly a frame relay to your house.

To offset the costs some providers charge a high equipment fee rather than giving you the eqip for free and then charging you $150 a month.

Well it is actually, DSL by satalite, I think is what they would call it.

Which is where I am currently looking, I am just sooo tired of Dial-up. I am giving it another week, this week I will upgrade my TCH reseller account, to a Semi-Dedicated server, then next week I will find me DSL :goof:

And Big Gorilla, I am still looking for that answer.

That is broadband by satellite, but it's not actually DSL.

Since the $600 includes a modem, dish, and installation, then that's probably not unreasonable. I haven't looked too much at satellite though (Living in a big city, I have plenty of options).

Take a look here to see what other users of Direcway have to say about the service. They aren't that highly rated, but when you live in the boonies, your options aren't a plenty.

Ok, my connection ranges between 24.6 and 37.8 lol, ANYTHING is better than this :goof:

My DSL is via Frontier phone company. ( frontiernet.net )

All equipment, modem and filters were free. I pay about $40 / mo

I've never had a slow problem at all in almost 2 yrs. My brother's cable modem in town bogs down big time on the weekends.

DSL rocks
