youneverknow Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 Microsoft is offering a free CD for fixing a lot of their secuity problems in their OS. Here is the link to MS for the free disk http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp youneverknow Quote
KevinW Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 except that it only includes updates through Oct 2003, and you have to wait 2-4 weeks. IMO, if you wait that long to patch your Windows workstation(s) - you are foolish and asking for whatever might happen. I personally update a test system as soon as a patch is released, then monitor the Microsoft newsgroups for 24-48 hours, and if there are no major problems, I will then start pushing out the patch to my customers. Finally, if you have more than one systems at a location or at your home, take a look into Shavlik's HfNetChkPro - they have a free version that works with up to 10 workstations and a server. Quote
krieser Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 It may be a slow way, but there are people out there (like my Dad ) who use dialup and never download updates because of the amount of time it takes... At least I can get him current within the last six months (he's never done an update ). I've wanted to steal his computer many times, and take it to my house and do updates, but never could. Quote
DarqFlare Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 IMHO, you should always apply new patches and updates the second they come out. When a patch or security update is issued, that basically says to the entire world "There's a problem here and we're fixing it." The problem with that is... Then the entire hacking community can exploit it and know exactly what the problem is. So unpatched users are at an even greater risk. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 For me this is a great tool to add to my toolbox and helps save me a ton of time. A lot of time I end up reinstalling systems back to factory settings or a simple "clean" install. I then spend hours at the Windows Update site downloading and installing all the updates that have accumilated over the years. Installing them from a CD is ten times faster. Quote
TCH-Sales Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 With the abundance of patches for Windows that have been released (not bashing it, just being truthful here) I'd say having a CD of at least some of them would be mighty helpful with doing any reinstalls. Then again, I'm one of those folks that waits for a little bit to make sure the patch is safe before installing as well. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 I've wanted to steal his computer many times, and take it to my house and do updates, but never could. If you have a fast connection why don't you download the patches and put them on a CD and send them to him. I've done this. Quote
