borfast Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 (edited) I moved your post to this forum. It was previously in TotalChoice Hosting General Support -> Security Discussions. Please post your messages in the right forum. You'll have a better chance that someone with knowledge about your problem looks at your post and you'll also help us keep some order in out forums By the way, I was amazed at your message. You managed to write a fairly big message and use only one single period ( '.' ) and no other punctuation marks! Though this will not impact our forums organisation, it will surely impact (negatively, of course) your chances of someone understanding your problem and helping you... Madmanmcp Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 I started reading and reading and reading...since I didn't see an end to the sentence I had to stop and take a breath. Now you have listed several questions and problems here and they do not look related. Give us one problem at a time and someone will try and help and when its corrected we can move on to the next. The first question you had was about Active Directory. My question would be why do you want to install it? AD is for "Organizations to centrally manage and share information on network resources and users while acting as the central authority for network security. Active Directory is designed to be a consolidation point for isolating, migrating, centrally managing, and reducing the number of directories that companies require." If you are an individual user you would not need it. If you are from a big organization I would direct you to your Network Admin and let him install it Quote
TCH-Rob Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 OK, here we go. You are coming from an AOL.EU address and I am thinking English isn't your natural language. That said I think you are doing ok so far, just need to get that period thing working. Now, I will go with Madman. If it is just you there should be no reason to run Active Directory on a personal computer, server or no. Next, svchost.exe. Here is the word from MS on it; Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. You can have more than one svchost.exe running at a time. Lastly, it has been years since I knew how to configure connection settings for AOL, I would contact them for any connection issues you may be having. Let me know if I missed something. Quote
