caffeine Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 hi, i signed up with my current webhost last month and in the last 30 days the server has already experienced downtime twice, for more than 10 hours at a time. even though i run a personal website and the downtime really doesn't cost me much, it can be extremely annoying. i am planning to jump ship pretty soon and so far it seems TCH will be my choice. i've done a fair bit of shopping around and i'm convinced so far that you guys will definitely be a good choice. so before i jump ship i'd like to ask a few questions: -how easy will it be to transfer my domain over to TCH? I have access to Cpanel, and I also have access to the domain because I registered it myself. -Movable Type installation. Will it be possible to move my existing movable type installation over to TCH servers? I run it with a mysql database. your help will be gladly appreciated! Quote
TCH-Andy Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 Hi Caffeine, If your current host is using cpanel, then we can attempt to transfer your site for you (some hosts block this), but for small sites (less that 100MB) this is usually fairly effective. If not, then I would do a backup from your old host, copy the file accross, and restore here. MT works fine here, so as long as they aren't using versions that aren't to different, it shouldn't be a problem. Andy Quote
TCH-Dick Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 One thing you will probably need to do is edit your MT config file if the database names dont match up. Quote
Billy Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 caffeine - You won't be sorry. Total Choice rocks! I've been so happy with them. I now host 2 sites w/ Total Choice Hosting, and I've never had any problems. Servers always up and running. Great support. Lots of extras, too! On top of all this, it's dirt cheap. Best hosting out there, hands down. ps Nobody paid me to say this, i swear. Quote
caffeine Posted November 19, 2003 Author Posted November 19, 2003 thank you everyone! i'll definitely be switching within the next few days. in doing the transfer, what sort of downtime should be expected from the propagation of the DNS? Quote
TCH-Don Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 It can take up to three days for all the ISP name-servers to be updated. During that time it may jump back and forth between the old and new site. And you will be the last to see your new site, (just kidding ) But I does seem like the longest wait. anyway Welcome to the family Thumbs Up if you need anything, just ask your new family. Quote
caffeine Posted November 19, 2003 Author Posted November 19, 2003 haha. all this family talk makes me feel warm and fuzzy already! ;P i just signed up, waiting for the account to be activated. I'm the one with "Invoice 10571" so can somebody get in touch with me soon to help me along with the transfer process? thanks alot. my site was down for more than 3 days - the darkest period, ever. looking forward to a great relationship with TCH Quote
caffeine Posted November 19, 2003 Author Posted November 19, 2003 oops i forgot to include the info here. When you sign up for your account with Total Choice Web Hosting, mention in the comments field that your site is currently hosted using cPanel and you'd like for us to move it for you. Make sure that there is listed a way for us to get in touch with you to get the information we need to initiate the site copy. how long will it take to set up my account? i'd like to move as soon as possible!
