6/5/2012 :: Backup Server Raid Failure (Buserver3)

Recommended Posts

Last night we took down buserver3 for a failed RAID drive replacement. Upon bringing the server back online after maintenance, the RAID array should have begun to rebuild. However, the server did not recognize a second drive in the RAID 5 array. If two or more drives fail in a RAID 5 array, the array is broken. Unfortunately we were unable to get the RAID volume back online.

It is not typical that we experience 2 drive failures at once, which is why we opt to use RAID 5, as it offers better performance. However, because we have encountered such a situation, we have chosen to create a new RAID 6 array on the server, which will continue to run even after two drive failures. This will help to ensure that we never find ourselves in a situation like this again.

We have already began repopulating the backup server from local backups on each server. If you have any individual questions or concerns, feel free to contact us via live chat or the help desk link in my signature.

Thank you,

The repopulation of backups to this server has been completed. To our delight the performance of RAID 6 has been excellent and the server is running better than we could have ever hoped for. So much in fact that we are going to be looking at implementing RAID6 on all our backup servers. This does present a problem only because moving from raid5 to raid6 will mean that our total amount of usable space will decrease. So we are looking at adding another server to the backup farm here at TCH.

We will keep everyone updated on this project. However, if you are a user that utilizes backup3 I am confident that you are already appreciating the major increases in speed that this change has brought to your backups.

It is a great day to be a TCH GURU!
