TCH-Thomas Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 A quick google search reveals several converters for avi to other formats. Quote
glamorouscreations Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 I tried that, but all I get are very expensive programs any ideas which are good to use? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I just remembered that I have Format factory (formatoz.com), which should do what you want and it´s freeware. To find which format that is best for your project, I would make a backup/copy of the original avi file first (just to make sure you can redo things if it goes wrong) and then try some/all of the formats it can convert to and when found go on with burning it on a dvd. glamorouscreations Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Thank you so much, when I get it to a dvd would I be able to watch it on my dvd player???? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 There are two formats as far as I know, + and -, and both your burner and player must support the format the disc supports. Many burners and players today supports both, but check your equipment first to be sure. Quote
glamorouscreations Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Thank you I will let u know what the details are when I have converted it, which is the best format to convert avi to? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Sorry, I´ve only done a few tests myself so I don´t know which format is best and I guess it also depends if you want to make fancy menus etc too. In my tests, I only tried the mpg format. If you want to make menus etc, Format factory is not for this project but if you just want to convert it and later burn it on a dvd, it will do the work. TCH-Bruce Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Windows Movie Maker is also a freeware download from Microsoft that will convert an AVI for DVD use. Quote

Bruce, I have that and it converts it to UFD which will not read on any home dvd player Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I could swear we've used that to create home movie dvd's. Quote
glamorouscreations Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 I dont know but I did it 3 times ...and it converts it to UDf and thats it but when i put it in my home dvd players it wont recognize it....even the new dvd player i just got... I tried that program thomas said to try but im not sure what format to convert the avi file to, i tried vob but it didnt recognize that either...not even my pc...I dont know what else to do. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I use Nero for all my CD or DVD needs. It usually comes packaged with the DVD burners you buy or pre-loaded on the PC's. You can also purchase a full version of the program which will come with more options then the free version. Quote
JTD Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 (edited) I just tried that (formatoz.com) And had no problems converting a AVI formatted movie to a wmp vcd format. The program works great. PS Windows movie maker will not reformat an AVI movie. I have tried that numerous times. Edited December 29, 2008 by JTD Quote
glamorouscreations Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 ok does that mcp vcd play on home dvd players? Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 ok does that mcp vcd play on home dvd players? No. VCD stands for Video Compact Disk and is a format for CD's only. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I was wrong, it wasn't Windows Movie Maker, it was some Sony burning software that came loaded on our machine. Quote
JTD Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 It also depends on your DVD player. I have one that will play multiple formats. Up to and including VCD,WMV,MP4,MP3, Quote
glamorouscreations Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 my problem is I used the format factory but my biggest question is what format do I convert the avi file to so that when I burn it to a dvd, that the dvd will play on our home dvd players, so far the VOB file and AVI files will not play on any of our home dvd players and these players were purchased wihin the last month. Please all help is appreciated. Quote
