Hi and Merry Christmas to you all!

We have one computer. It's Vista.

I use Mozilla Firefox on my side and my husband uses Internet Explorer 7 on his side.

Suddenly it is taking FOREVER for the IE browser to open ... and to close for that matter.

When he clicks on his favourites - nada. Just an empty drop down box.

So I switched to my side and tried IE. Same thing.

Firefox is humming along smoothly as always.

I've tried to solve the problem on a microsoft help page and it gets so darn convoluted I gave up.

We'd really appreciate your advice as to what to do.

Could be several things.

Have you rebooted the PC lately?

Have you cleared the cache in IE?

Are you running low on disk space?

If you are switching users instead of logging one out you may have too many things running at one time. Try logging out of a users and logging in on only one.

Yes I've rebooted several times.

Yes ... I use ccleaner.

I have 221 GB of free space.

I've logged myself off. I have the same problem with IE on my side of the computer.

Can I delete and reinstall IE?

DH says that this happened when Shaw messed up our account and we had to re-enter all of our email identities. Is that possible? Would there be a connection.

If you acquire a lot of spyware it will do great harm to IE.

Run spybot S&D or malwarebyte ( free progs )

Try using OPERA

I'm laughing! Yes, I've just suggested he not use IE anymore.

As for the other suggestions re spyware etc., I'm way ahead of you on that ... I'm very thorough with my computer.

No we don't have Yahoo toolbars installed.

My question is still: What about un-installing IE and reinstalling it to see if perchance some portion of it has been damaged?

I can be wrong about this but as far as I know, you can´t uninstall Internet Explorer and then reinstall it without reinstalling the whole windows, since Internet Explorer it´s a part of Windows.

I had a feeling I might get an answer like that. I guess we will just have to be satisfied with a switch to Firefox, on both sides of the computer.

You could try installing beta 2 of IE 8 but remember to have it set to run in IE7 compatiability mode otherwise a lot of sites will look errrr screwed.

BTW have you done the recent security update? If so has that made any difference?

Hmm, I'd rather not install that Beta program. I don't feel comfortable with them. I prefer that all the bugs have been worked out by the brilliant before I start trusting them.

I have automatic updating. My machine is checked daily and all updates are downloaded then.

To All:

I am having a nasty problem with IE7 stalling when opening new webpages.

It just sites there, waiting for world peace, sometimes it even freezes to death.

Have tried everything, including the procedure in Microsoft help site, with no success.

Got a new Dell machine, and guess what: same problem!

This pointed to my wireless setup, but bypassed the router, and same thing.

Have same McAfee setup on both machines, old and new. Could that be?

Tried disabling McAfee, same thing.

Downloaded FireFox, and it behaves better, but sometimes it just won't load some websites, saying the website does not support encription?

Old machine has XP Pro SP2, new machine has Vista Home Premium SP1.

Just need a light at the end of the tunnel, I can do the grunt work.

I have a DSL service, medium speed.

Please help if you have heard of something similar.

Thanks,

R Lopez
