Hi,

I am setting up a Zen Cart and am being instructed to run Apache.

Apache is a PHP program but I am not sure if I need it.

I have Total Choice Hosting as my server. Isn't that what they mean

when they say, "find a web server to host your application"?

I do not plan to install Zen Cart on my computer for use there.

Don't I want my shopping cart to be a "server-side application"?

Why would anyone want to install a web-based application on a local

computer?

Ignorance is humbling but I am learning. :)

Thanks very much.

TCH are already running Apache on most servers including yours.

You don´t need it on your local computer unless you may want to test scripts before putting them on your site here on TCH.

Many people install Zencart on their local computers to make, and view, changes to the template and oher things without having to constantly upload and download the files they want to edit from a remote server.

I've never done it. Once you get into a sort of rhythm uploading and downloading files, it doesn't take that much longer. I have several test sites on one of my TCH domains that I use for testing mods, etc.

Hi stevesh,

It is an interesting idea. I guess it is much as I do with my photos I edit and upload. If they are already in my computer I can just correct them and upload them FTP and replace the one on the domain.

I wonder if it is better to upload an empty Zen Cart onto my hard drive to use for editing, or wait until it is configured on the domain and then transfer a copy over to my computer via FTP.

Any ideas?

As Bruce points out, it's more work than just installing Zencart on your local computer. You'll need Apache (most Zencarters use a distribution called XAMPP) and MySql Server.

As you said, mostly you'll be editing images and uploading them to the server. Seems like a lot of work to install Zencart locally for relatively little gain.
