Madmanmcp
I see from a quick Google that I am not alone in receiving this email. But I have been able to figure out if its legit or a scam. I am leaning on a scam but wanted to ask here for more guideance. It says its from "icann@securepaynet.net" which raises a red flag, ICANN has its own website and doesn't work for Securepaynet. It also is signed by "TotalChoice Hosting Domain Support" which I don't believe because TCH doesn't do Domains, they farm it out to a third party. Whats the scoop, did this come from TCH? -----Original Message----- > From: icann@securepaynet.net > To:xxxxxxxxx > Sent: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 4:41 pm > Subject: Important Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s) > > > > ***************************************** > Important Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s) > ***************************************** > > Dear So & SO, > > Several months ago we sent you a notice to review and update the contact > information for your domain name(s). MikeJ
It's legit. The registrar has been sending them out for some time and is simply a reminder that the contact info on your domain needs to be accurate or they can take your domain away from you. Madmanmcp
Thanks Mike, its still looks fishy with all the strange emails addresses and then being signed by you. I understand that the information needs to be accurrate and mine is so I am just going to ignore these emails. I'm glad I only had 2 domains, I read that folks with more are getting spammed with an email for each one
MikeJ
Oh, and yes, it's from TotalChoice, via its domain provider. Although you should only get one email per account you have with the registrar, not per domain. You may just get reminders over time. Mission
I sent an email to my domain registrar (it's not TCH) about emails allegedly from my registrar needing info updates for my domain names. Perhaps registrars might want to develop a better way to solicit the review of the DN info, because it does indeed seem like some kind of phishing scam. Especially when I visited my registrar's site and saw nothing whatsoever on the site about updating ICANN info. I deleted the first email. When I got the second, I emailed the registrar about it and learned that it was a legit email. We are taught that we aren't to click any links inside of a suspicious-looking email, and then a very important email comes from a suspicious-looking source asking me to click the link in the email and update all info? Not too conducive to maintaining a safe Internet experience from people who should know better...
JTD
I also received one of those emails. But it still strikes me as suspicious. I have had domain names now for over 3 plus years and have never received an email like this before. And my domains are not with TCH! TCH-Bruce
They are valid emails. I got two this morning and one last week for my domains. I received these emails last year as well.
