TCH-Bruce Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Has anyone tried Digsby? It's only available for Windows. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 Yes, it's the newcomer to the block. Read about it yesterday (first time I've heard of it), Digsby. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Downloaded Digsby now and will try it in a while after finishing something else. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 I split these posts off the Pidgin update thread. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I´ve tried it now, very briefly though so the review isn´t 4 pages long. I like it alot. As other similar applications it has the option to use all common IM applications from one application which works well and was very easy to set up. It will also check email (not only AIM, MSN etc) and my facebook account, I like that. Now I might not need to spend that much time on facebook. The only things that bugs me as a Trillian user is that you can not (not as far as I have found anyway) have secure chats through AIM, only regular non-secure chats. Also, in the system tray, it added not only the digsby icon, but also an icon for gmail and facebook, unnecessary in my opinion. So far I give it 4 (out of 5) stars. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Addition to Bruce´s initial post. Mac and Linux versions seems to come soon though. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 As soon as you find the secure chat function I'm sold! Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I checked their forum and another place and I found two things... 1) They are pretty fast with new releases 2) and yes, they want to make it secure so if #1 is true, we should not have to wait too long for secure chats. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Also, in the system tray, it added not only the digsby icon, but also an icon for gmail and facebook, unnecessary in my opinion. I figured this out. No more gmail and facebook icons unless wanted. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Doesn´t look like it´s possible, but it will probably come. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Trying the email notification at the moment, if it works as I hope, poptray is probably gone from my computer as well. Edit/addition: It did, so if spam will stay as non-existent as until now poptray will go. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 Looks like I will have to give this a try. Quote
Head Guru Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I was just concerned that you are required to have an digsby account. There is a thread about this on their forums. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I knew there had to be a catch somewhere. Oh well...bye Digsby...for now atleast. We´ll see if I continue to use you if this gets solved. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 7, 2008 Author Posted April 7, 2008 Crap, server logging of messages. Guess it was too good to be true. But aren't AIM messages logged on the AOL servers? Quote
MikeJ Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 However, I recieved some information from Bill that they log all your chats on their servers. So I removed it and am now using Trillian. That is incorrect. They do save your account ID's and passwords encrypted on their servers: In order to access your third party Instant Messaging, Email, and Social Network accounts, you must enter your applicable user name(s) and password(s) in to DIGSBY. This information is stored on our servers and is encrypted in a manner that would prevent anyone, including DOTSYNTAX LLC employees from accessing your passwords. They do not, however, log or even handle your IM messages: Your IM conversations are not sent to DIGSBY servers or stored at DOTSYNTAX LLC owned facilities. However, certain features such as "Chat Logs" result in Instant Messaging history being stored on the computer you use to access DIGSBY. DOTSYNTAX LLC does not read your private online communications when you use any of the communication tools offered as DIGSBY Products. You can find that info clearly posted on their privacy policy: http://www.digsby.com/privacy.php So to log your IM's, they would be breaking the law. As far as saving your passwords in an encrypted form on their servers, that's a personal call on whether you have an issue with that or not. Just FYI, Trillian Astra requires an Astra account in order to use, just like Digsby requires a Digsby account. The reason for that is simply so that you can have account informatino saved on the servers and have a more portable IM client. If you don't like that, then right now, you need to use something other than those two clients. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Thanks Mike. I read that my morning and then began thinking that how on earth can they save chat logs? Ok, this client is new at the moment but in future when they probably have a lot more users than now, how can they save each conversation, either they wont or they have a lot of server space. Me thinks it´s time to let Digsby come back and do some work. Quote
MikeJ Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I gave it a test drive. Interesting. It looks like they are basically trying to make an Adium clone. It's based on Webkit, just like adium, and you can even download Adium themes from adiumxtras.com... with mixed results so far though (the included themes in the distribution appear to be mostly Adium themes). The ability to reply to messages in the pop-up notification window is kinda neat. Overall, though, I find it to still be a little buggy, and feature poor, so I'm going back to my Pidgin for now. Also, one big dislike I have for the current Digsby service is if the digsby servers go down or are inaccessible, you can not log into your IM accounts. Pidgin has no servers, so I have service as long as the respective IM services are running. Quote
