Mrs. Muddled Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I'm having a senior's moment. I use the a/m program and like it. I have discovered this evening that "something" is wrong with it. When I try to play a help movie ... nothing happens. So, I dug up what I think is the setup CD (it says Setup, Designs, and Art Disc 1) and I put it in the E drive and tried to run it. It just tells me to restart the computer and run the setup CD. So ... I'm not getting anywhere. It's been years since I went into Start - run ... to make a CD work that I've forgotten what I'm supposed to type once I'm in START run to make the CD work. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 CANCEL the alert!!! I've solved my problem. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 Ya ... I no sooner posted my success than I discovered I still have the problem with the program that I had before I went to the trouble of re-installing it. There are help movies associated to this program that will not run and I can't figure out why. The list comes up ... I click on the movie clip I want and ... nada. I want to add a person to a group photo ... a process I have not done before, and I know there is a good "how to" clip, showing exactly what the process is. Frustrating. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Did you check the program developer's site? Most provide the same help information online. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I use the a/m program and like it. Could you give a real name? I don't know what "a/m" is. So, I dug up what I think is the setup CD (it says Setup, Designs, and Art Disc 1) and I put it in the E drive and tried to run it. It just tells me to restart the computer and run the setup CD. It's been years since I went into Start - run ... to make a CD work that I've forgotten what I'm supposed to type once I'm in START run to make the CD work. Usually its E:\setup or E:\install There are help movies associated to this program that will not run and I can't figure out why. The list comes up ... I click on the movie clip I want and ... nada. By "list" do you mean the file list in Windows Explorer or a list in the "a/m" program that you are running. If its a Windows list then the file "association" in windows for the movie extention has been lost. You either re-associate the file extention or you manuall start the "a/m" program and open the movie from the program. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 a/m ... means "the above mentioned" program. I forget everyone does not necessarily speak my abbreviated language ;-) by "list" I mean a list in my photo program: When I go to the HELP files there is a list of various little instructional movies MSPP has designed so that, for instance, how to add motion to a picture I am designing .... or in my case, how to insert the missing person's face into a group photo. I should just have to click on the movie I want to view and it should open. Not! I've been pouring over various sites, trying to find information that's helpful. I'm not getting anywhere fast. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 by "list" I mean a list in my photo program: When I go to the HELP files there is a list of various little instructional movies MSPP has designed so that I you are using a command (open) in the program and you navigating to a folder that has "HELP" (.hlp) files in it and you are double-clicking to try and get to view them, then you are doing it wrong. This OPEN list is used to open files created by the program. Try using Window Explorer and navigate to that folder and double-click on the HELP file and see if that does what you want. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 This is the screen I am talking about: If I click on "Getting started" for example, nothing happens. Why? Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Pictures help Now I understand what you are describing but I am not sure what could be wrong. I checked a few things and can give you a few things to try but I think there is not much you can do. Your program is old and MS doesn't support it anymore and from what I've read on Google searches others are also having issues with it. Seems there are conflicts with other software programs and it doesn't run well on the newer Operating Systems, you are running XP I believe and it had compatability issue with older software. I see you are running Firefox, maybe it has a problem. Its a known fact that MS and Firefox do not play well together. Try setting IE as your default browser and see if the movie works in a IE window. Try re-installing. I gave the possible command for installing the CD earlier. Its an old program and you may need to purchase and learn a new one, sorry. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 So! Before I accept that my program is just like me ... old and no good for nothin' ... I decided to check out your Firefox conflict suggestion. I clicked on Internet Explorer and lo and behold, I can't connect to the internet via IE. I tried from quick start and from my program list. I have no idea why my IE would suddenly have quit functioning, but I figured I'd better check with y'all before I click on the restart IE to original default settings. When I read all the stuff it clears out, it made me hold off. I've made lots of changes to little selection boxes over the years for security reasons ... and I wont have a clue what to alter once it goes back to the original settings. Is there something else I could try before I resort to that? Yes, I've done a re-start. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 can't connect with IE Should I do this? Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nan...internetjpg.jpg This is what I'm getting. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 From the browser's address bar it is trying to access something on your own machine. 127.0.0.1 is your machine and then the :4664 is a port it's trying to open and I assume what follows is what it is trying to load. Can you access your own website with IE? Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) I can access my website from my desktop icons and the little IE icon appears up in the address bar. It is also apparent that I access TCH (via Roboform) through IE also. I have the icon appearing showing I'm connecting to you via IE. Edited January 16, 2008 by Mrs. Muddled Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Well there is nothing wrong with the browser so there is nothing to fix there. Looks like your problem is with the MS program itself. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) . . . o . . . kay . . . so . . . um . . . now I'm thinking I haven't painted the right picture of what's happening. When I said I can access my personal website from my desktop ... I meant I have a list of shortcuts on my desktop that will allow me to go direct to my website ... and it is apparent that IE is making the connection because I can see it in the address bar. Same when I use Roboform to access your site. IE still cannot be accessed from my QUICK START or from MY PROGRAMS. That's what I need to fix. Edited January 17, 2008 by Mrs. Muddled Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I am not sure what you are asking. Your IE works. Are you asking how to make it the default browser that madman asked you to do? If so in IE, select Tools, then programs and click the Make Default button. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 I can't get IE to open to do that. Since Madman suggested I switch to IE from Firefox to see if it might be a compatibility problem, I have discovered that the IE browser will not open. I've searched the net and it would appear that I'm not alone with this problem ... same as I'm not alone with the fact that several days of the week Microsoft sends me the apology that they've had to shut down. It is their problem that unfortunately has become a problem for many of us. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Put a shortcut to IE on your desktop and drag a URL to it. It should then open. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I can't get IE to open to do that. Whew, what can of worms have I opened here This is either a 2nd unrelated problem or the reason your help movies are not working...we may never know. I can't get IE to open to do that. You don't need to open IE to make it your default browser. In Control Panel click on Internet Options and click on the Programs tab and check the box near the bottom to check if IE is the default browser. Next time you click a web page link it will ask you. There are several ways to open IE click on START and type IEXPLORE and press enter or click on START and PROGRAMS and there should be an Internet Explorer icon in the list to click or I notice an IE icon near your start button in your picture Now if you get that error message when you do these you have problem for sure ... Mrs. Muddled Posted January 18, 2008 Author Posted January 18, 2008 Dear Bob: Thanks so much for your efforts on my behalf. I appreciate it so much. I finally seem to have solved ... at least one of my problems. IE had stopped working on my side of the computer. It was still happily functioning on my husband's side of the computer. I think I may have caused the problem when I started using Google Desktop. Who knows? Not sure. I so seldom use IE. So, after spending hours pouring over various sites, I finally found myself back on the Microsoft site and I went ahead and reloaded my IE to the original default setting. It works ... so far. I still am not having any luck with my movies on my Microsoft Picture it Publishing. Not sure when that part of the program stopped working, because I never use the help file movies. I think you are right that it is likely something to do with incompatibility since I downloaded IE 7 ... or something like that. I HATE it when I can't figure something out!!! Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) Your welcome, sorry I couldn't come up with fix for your Picture program. Its probably an incompatability problem between XP and the earlier version of Windows that was around when Picture It was originally written. Edited January 18, 2008 by Madmanmcp Quote
pkrohnert Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Have you tried looking for the invidivual movie files using Windows Explorer? They may be saved on the CD or in the Program Files folders somewhere that you can find them. It's possible they can be viewed using another program once you know what video format they are in. It's a long shot, but it may work. PK Quote
