Ok, so I rebooted the ol' windows xp for a refresh and it won't post.

stops at the first screen that says

hit tab to post or del to enter bios setup

it used to just go on to windows without any interaction at that screen but

now it won't pass that screen no matter what key i hit

sound like a dead motherboard or what ?????

thanks for your input

don't mean to piggyback, but I got a computer like that, it will start to boot, get to the windows XP splash page, then go back into reboot mode, the go to the splash page, over and over...i found a site that says that it might be the memory...can that be true?

Thanks

Yes Jayson can certainly be a memory issue. If you have other memory just try changing one of the cards of memory to isolate which one might be bad, if more than one module. If you only have one module, then take it out and see if you can use it in another machine or a friends machine. Won't wreck anything as long as the memory is compatible with the computer. This will isolate that.

It could also be a faulty hard drive as well.

Try cleaning the edge connections of the memory module with a rubber the plastic ones and make sure it seats properly as well. Another solution that works at times.

Also check all cables are seated properly as well.

Yes, it could be memory...or several other things. A hard drive as flashram mentioned or the motherboard going bad could also be the problem. Other possible culprits would be bad software drivers, a currupt registry or even a virus. Do you have a bootable CD or DVD? If you can boot to one of these and it runs then that would rule out the memory and motherboard being the problem. You can then investigate the hard drive or other software issues.

Did you try booting to safe mode? and run antivirus and spybot?

sometimes windows might be looking for a driver it can't find.

Did you try a step by step boot?
