jamestl2 Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 (edited) I was just wondering if there was a way I could test various themes I downloaded? I wanted to try different things, editing the PHP script, widgets, etc. with all my site info and before the new theme would "go public". I already have some traffic coming in and don't want to be messing with my site's settings before I'm sure the new theme is 100% ready. Plus I may not even like the new style. I was thinking about creating a "dummy site" within my account, then again I want to see all the info I have on my website currently in the new format. Should I just create a new folder, but wouldn't changing the theme have to affect my entire site, even the "viewable to the public" pages? Would anything like this also affect my SE rankings, links, etc.? Thanks Edited July 31, 2007 by jamestl2 Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Install a new copy of Wordpress into a subdomain on your site and create a new database to use with it. Quote
jamestl2 Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 I still feel a little puzzled. I created a new subdomain, and it already had wordpress installed on it (although I have no idea what my login info, affect on current site, etc. would be for this new copy). Will I get an entirely new wordpress dashboard to work with? Also, I don't think I quite understand databases very well. Are they where all the "public site information, webpages, etc." are stored? And do I create a new user for each database (because I don't want it to affect my SERP, links, etc.) Thanks Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 I created a new subdomain, and it already had wordpress installed on it (although I have no idea what my login info, affect on current site, etc. would be for this new copy). Will I get an entirely new wordpress dashboard to work with? Did you install this through fantastico? If yes, it would explain how the new wordpress installation ended up there. If yes on the above, it have its own of everything, so you can play around with it without risking anything on your "real" wordpress installation. Also, I don't think I quite understand databases very well. Are they where all the "public site information, webpages, etc." are stored? And do I create a new user for each database (because I don't want it to affect my SERP, links, etc.) The databases are placed outside your domain I believe For each installation you do that requires a database, you should create a new database for it. jamestl2 Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 (edited) Thanks, that is what I was hoping for I installed my first wordpress that I use for my primary site through fantastico, yes, however my login info is not the same, so I can't access it. PS, the domain I am trying to access it through is: http://toptenlisted.com/test/wp-login.php Edited August 11, 2007 by jamestl2 Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 When you set up the second blog through fantastico, it have asked you to enter the login info you want to use. If you can´t remember your login info, first thing to try is the "lost password" link on the login page you link to. Second, you could remove this test installation through fantastico and start over. TCH-Thomas Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 I forgot to say that option 2 (start over) is probably the easiest if you have not done too much with the blog yet. Quote
jamestl2 Posted August 11, 2007 Author Posted August 11, 2007 Thanks, I got it working Now all I need to do is work on my PHP skills Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 I am glad it´s working for you. Good luck with the php. Quote
htvqkoa Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 You can also set your theme up locally. Check out this tutorial for doing so: http://www.wpdesigner.com/2007/02/19/so-yo...ess-themes-huh/ If you follow the tutorial on making your very own template, it is a fantastic way to learn what all the Wordpress files and php lines truly mean. I went through the tutorial several times myself and learned more doing the tutorial than I was able to learn in the three years I have been working with Wordpress on my own. Quote
