TCH-Dick Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 TCHStatus.com has been updated and I want to thank everyone for their patience as we make the move to our new Data Center. We have now made changes to the status pages that will allow for easier maintence, therefore, these pages will be updated daily as we continue the data center migration. The most noticeable change you will see is that the network status and uptime stats have been combined into one page. You can view our entire server farm on this page or select only your server for more information. If you are unsure what server you are hosted you can check that at http://www.tchstatus.com/whatsmyserver.php Thanks
youneverknow Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Gosh, I hate those names...how confusing...it was so much simpler when they were numbered 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,etc etc....booo to TCH for going "cute" ....my 2 cents.... youneverknow
TCH-Bruce Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Some people don't like change. Sorry. I like the new naming scheme.

DWD Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Very nice. And, kudos to TCH for making the uptime reports public. Is there anyway we can put a script/code/what-cha-ma-call-it on our sites showing the yearly uptime stat of our server?
TCH-Bruce Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I don't think they would want people doing that as it would put undue burden on the server accepting the requests to serve the images. And it is like stealing bandwith.
DWD Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I don't think they would want people doing that as it would put undue burden on the server accepting the requests to serve the images. And it is like stealing bandwith. I'll bet the geniuses (I don't mean that sarcastically) behind the curtain could code something that would serve up a daily updated number. Once daily would eliminate the server burden and doing a number rather than an image would eliminate the bandwidth burden. They just need the right incentive from the Head Guru. Admittedly, this is not a priority, but would be a nice addition when the migration is done. And, if TCH is really proud of their uptime then what better way than to help sites they host show that uptime on their websites?
TCH-Bruce Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 The up time is calculated each time the page is loaded. There is no image for the overall up time so what is it that you would like to link too?
Jeren Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 At least you don't have to remember them all Remember them all? What if we already knew them all? <.<
Bob Crabb Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Great job!!!! Although I'm not a huge StarWars fan, I got a chuckle looking at the new server names. In my opinion, I always appreciate seeing a company where the culture allows a sense of humor to shine through. Good job, guys, and may the force be with you.
TCH-Bruce Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Remember them all? What if we already knew them all? <.>You can't already know them all since new ones are constantly being added.
DWD Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 The up time is calculated each time the page is loaded. There is no image for the overall up time so what is it that you would like to link too? Just an up time percentage like "99.983%" but for my purposes it doesn't need to be updated every time the page loads, just once a day would be fine. Again, I think it would be both light on the processor and bandwidth.
heyguy Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 I think it would be both light on the processor and bandwidth. Sure, if it's just you. But multiply anything times a few hundred servers and a several tens of thousands of domains and it all adds up. Not to mention the time it will take to put it together and maintain it. And there is the cost of all the help desk tickets that will come in if it ever stops working. If you want a cute little button for your site check out host-tracker.com. It's free for everyone and only counts against your bandwidth. Otherwise, why not just have a text link that says something like "Server Uptime: Almost Always" and have it link to the tchstatus.com page for your server?

Not to mention the time it will take to put it together and maintain it. And there is the cost of all the help desk tickets that will come in if it ever stops working. This argument sounds compelling in a vacccum But, in comparison to what TCH already does it is insignificant. If you want a cute little button for your site check out host-tracker.com. It's free for everyone and only counts against your bandwidth. Thanks, I've added it to my site. It will be interesting to see how it compares to TCH's stats after some data has been accumulated. Otherwise, why not just have a text link that says something like "Server Uptime: Almost Always" and have it link to the tchstatus.com page for your server? Too little cool factor...too much advertisement.
Head Guru Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 In addition to monitoring on a per server level, we have added core network uptime monitoring. This monitoring simply monitors our core network routers. This is a good thing to give a good feel for how well things are going at our datacenter. http://www.hyperspin.com/publicreport/4062/18681/2/59246
