I have a friend that is setting up a business, (customizing cars) and want to set up his own server, he know that he will need a good fast computer and and a way to connect to the internet, but that is all he knows, so what I am asking is:

What does he need installed on the computer? windows/linux, does he need mysql,

and how does he go about setting up a dedicated line to the computer...

Or if there is a link to a site that explains this, can someone point me there and I will show him the site..

Thanks

Well with all that experience I would suggest he leave the server business to the experts who know what they are doing. Starting up a business is going to take a lot of time and throwing on the extra work of learning how to setup and run a web server will be to much to handle.

What does he plan to do with this server? If you are talking about a web server, you should buy one from TCH. If you are talking about a file server or some such for use in his shop, fill us in on why he "needs" one.

ok, he is a mechanic, and he want a web server to host his web site, but he does not want to host it with someone else, but wahts to do it himself, that way he is not concerned with TOS policies. But I am trying to get him to host with TCH

Unless plans on hosting kiddie I AM A SPAMMER he shouldn't have any problems with TCH's TOS.

If it's a resource issue and he wants to shell out the cash for his own box, tell him to get a dedicated box. TCH's prices are very competitive in that arena.

Hosting your own webserver can be tough and it's not advisable for a newbie to host a server used for business. You have to purchase, configure, and maintain everything. You need at least one always on high-speed connection, preferably more, and that's very expensive. If anything goes wrong - and things typically go wrong at inconvenient times like when you are sleeping or out at dinner - there is nobody else around to help fix it.

Hosting a web server in your garage for kicks is fun. I have one and it's a blast to screw around with. But for real stuff I prefer a real server maintained by real professionals in a real data center.

I was a bit unsure at first whether it was a web server or a networked file server you were inquiring about and took a wild guess and was correct ;)

that way he is not concerned with TOS policies.

Well I can think several reasons about concerns with a TOS and most are not good. Is the TOS really a reason, can you discuss the actual parts of the TOS that are a problem or will this take us into a grey area of "not good"? Maybe the suggestion of a dedicated or even a semi-dedicated server will be all thats needed.

Now even with the dedicated server there will be a huge learning curve as you try to find your own way around the operating system and what software you need to run to perform the tasks necessary "to do business" and host a web site. Its not impossible but it can be a very frustrating experience if you have no network or computer education, and you don't plan everything in advance.

But I am trying to get him to host with TCH

Keep pushing that direction ...

TCH has fully managed dedicated servers. Pretty much the same as a reseller or virtual hosting account but the server is all yours.

Well, I have talked him into hosting with TCH, now the question is, if I start out with a silver package, and want to upgrade to a different plan, how hard is it to do that. if and when the time comes?
