Wordpress 2.1

Recommended Posts

I know that TCH is using a new enough version of MySQL (4+), and I'm curious if any of you WP pros out there care to offer opinions on whether or not to upgrade.

Since scripts are our responsibility to keep updated I will update my WP installations when it's available.

I won't be upgrading, at least not for a while.

I've been testing 2.1 for about six months and I've watched it grow and mature. There are some very nice new features, but even with the newest version (beta 2), I'm having issues that will prevent me from upgrading my live, primary blog. 2.1 itself is very nice, but plugin issues are a problem for me. Currently, two plugins I consider indispensable aren't working well under 2.1. Post Levels randomly populates the loop with duplicate content (to be fair, this is not a widespread issue) and Ultimate Tag Warrior has problems with tags being erased when comments are placed.

It's disappointing that I've tested 2.1 for so long and I may never end up using it, but I'm comfortable sticking with the 2.0.x line. The WordPress dev team has announced that they will continue updating the 2.0.x line for security and bug fixes for at least the next two to three years. I'll miss out on wizbang features, but not updating won't leave me any less secure.

I've checked the plugins known to work with 2.1 and all the ones I use seem to be listed there. I will be testing to be sure before I make the switch. Did the same when 2.0 first released. I had to wait a while before all the plugins caught up or I decided I didn't need them or found replacements.

I'm just using Spam Karma 2, Google Search, AddMySite, and Google Sitemaps.

Those seem to be compatible, so I think I will be good to go.

I'll probably wait a bit.

The WP folks have promised to maintain the 2.0 codebase, so upgrading to 2.1 isn't the only option in order to keep your script current. I'll wait a bit to see how things work. I'll set up a test blog and install my plugins and see if everything works. Then I'll watch the WP forums to see what problems people encounter.

When the 2.1 line stabilizes, THEN I'll upgrade.

I just upgraded, it took five minutes and is working fine. Of course, I have a really basic and simple installation, no extras. I was lucky this time, in the past, I've broken the program and had to start over, with a blank slate. It's definitely a good idea to read the upgrade directions before upgrading.

Thanks Charles. :)

For everyone that is upgrading (not new installation), there is upgrade instructions here.

Be sure to read them and as advised in the instructions, backup both your database and all files in your wordpress directory including the .htaccess file before the upgrade.
