ivanmax Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Hi, I get a huge amount of spam in all the mails I got in my totalchoice hosted websites. I haven´t given the mails to anybody so I assume totalchoice is selling them to publicity companies. Is anybody else getting all this spam? IVÁN Quote
makaveli Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 (edited) it wont be TCH, they don't sell on details. there has been a huge surge (around 40% if i remember) in spam internet wide. your best bet is to check you have spam assassin enabled in your Cpanel, click your mail button in there and if you use outlook/express install for free "AGAVA antispam servant" Bruce recommended this to me and it "flags" up all spam for me Edited January 17, 2007 by makaveli Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I get spam in all my accounts whether they are hosted on TotalChoice or elsewhere. Spam is a big nuisance but can be controlled somewhat by the user by activating Spam Assassin on your account, setting the number of points required to prevent spam mail low enough to catch it without blocking legitimate email. Set your default address for your account to :fail: and a lot of messages will not get through. You can also block it client side using tools like K9, Anti-Spam Servant and a host of other programs. Saying that TCH is selling your email address to spammers is ludicris. Why would they do that? If you have a domain name you will get spam. It's a fact of owning a domain. It is very easy for someone to come to your site and start spamming you doing a dictionary spam for every email address possible. Quote
dcumpian Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Also, I would recommend setting your default email address for each domain to :fail:. That way, unless the email is addressed to a specific email account, it is not saved on your mail server. A lot of the spam that comes in to TCH customer's domains are spammers who get the domain name from public records. Regards, Dan Quote
heyguy Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I haven´t given the mails to anybody so I assume totalchoice is selling them to publicity companies. Sure, how do you think they paid for that new backup server? Seriously though, that's a mighty big assumption, not to mention it's way off base. Welcome to the Internet. Quote
Head Guru Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 That's the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Of course we do not sell your e-mail addresses to spammers. Sorry I was away yesterday, I was picking up my new Bentley. Quote

TCH-Don Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Yes if you own a domain name spammers will try to send to any name at your domain. Set the default address to :fail: and 99% of the spam is gone. I only use my ISP address for the contact address and this forum and have never received any spam at that address. Quote
stevevan Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Welcome to life on the 'net. Spammer have a way of finding you no matter what hosting company you use. Bill...awesome car! Quote
ivanmax Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 Hi, How can I sell the default address to fail? How can I activate the spam assasin? I have started to recieve enormous amounts of spam and I don´t really think this is normal. IVAN Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Spamassassin: Log in to your cpanel, then: 1) Click on "Mail" 2 Click on "Spamassassin" 3) Click "Enable Spamassassin" Enable spambox too if you want but its generally not needed. Setting default address to fail: 1) Click on "Mail" 2 Click on "Default Address" 3) Click on Set Default Address 4) Enter :fail: in the field "to" (Do NOT forget the colons) 5) Save Quote
Pocketman Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I've found spamassassin to be quite helpful - WHEN IT"S TURNED ON AT TCH! Every few weeks I wake up to find 40-50 spam messages in my inbox. Spamassassin is enabled on by site, but it isn't filtering the messages. A trouble ticket or two gets it fixed, but the cycle then starts all over again. I have accounts on two different servers, but only see this on 76. Wouldn't be so bad if it was just me, but my "customers" get the same barrage, so I in turn get a second or third dose from them. Thanks for allowing me to vent. Quote
Gail Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Sorry I was away yesterday, I was picking up my new Bentley. Great looking car Bill - oh sorry, Dr. Spam. I also got a good chuckle from your post. Gail Quote
