Matt_G
Quick question. I am getting ready to install smf on a sub domain of mine. Should I install smf in the root of that sub domains folder or should I install to a sub folder of that? I'm not sure what best practice is or if it even matters. TCH-Don
A sub domain is a folder as in domain/folder fantastico will not install to a folder/folder so you would need to download SMF and install is yourself by creating the folder than upload the files to that folder and visit the install.php file but you can install from fantastico to the folder that is your sub-domain. Does that help?

Matt_G
Whoops, just triedfantastic will not install to an existing folder so you will have to install it your self. Actually it did install to an existing folder. I already had the subdomain setup. I just installed it to the root of that folder. /public_html/forums One more question if you don't mind me pestering you. Do you have any recommendations as to what the files and folders permissions should be CHMOD'ed to after install? I did install using fantastico. Should I just leave them alone? The only thing I would need to mess with is settings.php I think. After install it was set to 644. If I want to edit server settings I can manually change settings.php to 777 and when I'm done set it back to 644. Is this the best way? I don't want my site or your server left open to anything. Can you tell I am new at this?
TCH-Don
OK to put SMF in a sub domain use cpanel to create the sub domain use file manager or ftp to delete the folder then in fantastico install SMF in the same folder. Cpanel has already created the redirection and now the forum will be in a sub domain.
TCH-Don
Yes you can do that. I do the same when upgrading, change just long enough to upgrade then change back. I put all folder at 755. Glad it worked for you. I just tried and fantastico did not want to install to an existing folder.
Matt_G
I just tried and fantastico did not want to install to an existing folder. Very weird that it worked for me and not for you. Oh well, the site is working for me and that is all that matters. Thanks for the help Don.
