Site Update For Luddites

Recommended Posts

I have a client who wants to make minor updates (swap out pictures, change text) to their site themselves. Problem is, I'm not confident they have the skills to even navigate to the html editor in cpanel. Any suggestions on what is the absolute easiest way for a non-technical person to make small changes to their site?

Man that's a loaded question. The best thing would be to educate them on how to use FTP and show them where the pictures are on the server and have them replace them with an FTP program.

As for text changes, they should be made off line and uploaded with FTP as well.

I base my answer on their site consisting of html files and images.

Another option would be to install a content management system for them that they could log into and make modifications. Still they will need to learn how to FTP images.

If they lack the technical skill to use even the html editor in cPanel, then maybe they should just pay someone else to make changes for now. It's nice to save money, but not everyone was meant to work with computers.

The HTML editor in cPanel has been disabled due to a vulnerability. cPanel has never released a fix so that won't work.

I don't know anything but I can read a manual. I mean, I managed to install movable type so that says I'm persistent if nothing else.

I would like a book recommendation that will help me manage the back end of my site. The whole CP interface, some kind of dummies guide to whatever those php, sql and apache thingies are. I mean, I'm not quite that dumb but assume I know nothing...what books should I buy? I appreciate your advice, thanks.

The Dummies series books on php and mysql are quite good for a beginner.

Apache is the web server software. Since it's run on the host side and you can't modify it I wouldn't know what to recommend except to google for information. If you want to run your own web server I recommend something like XAMPP which includes a web server, php processor and mysql.

I would suggest a content management system like Joomla with something like the JCE editor. Just like word to use, no HTML, and very easy to control

oh no, I don't want to go and do something like running my own server! Heaven forbid! Trust me, I already have a well established career in a totally different field and have no desire whatsoever to change horses midstream. I mean, I still don't know all there is about my field, why would I want to get into yours? I just want to be less clueless and less of a drain on the intellectual resources here. I just want to understand more.

I had gone to B&N and browsed the stacks regarding php/perl/mysql but my eyes glazed over. I appreciate your advice and will shop amazon later today.
