Kaula
Hi, I'm not sure if this is a help ticket issue, so I thought I'd ask here first. Sometimes I have to transfer several hundred files too and from my website at a time, pictures or schoolwork or whatever... when I do this, I have to do it in sections, because after a few minutes of either uploading or downloading a ton of files with an ftp client (smartftp, dreamweaver, gftp are the ones I use), the server will stop responding for around 30 seconds to a minute and I'll have to reconnect and start over. Also during that 30-60 seconds I cant reach my website via http either. So I guess my question is, Is there any sort of protection inplace that might be limiting the amount of files that can be transferred in a given amount of time? Thanks, Paul
TCH-Bruce
Hi Paul, don't know of any limit but if I were uploading that many files at one time I would zip them up into a single file and FTP that. Then use the file manager in cPanel to extract them on the server.
TCH-Don
I had similar problems on a dial-up, I think it was my ISP or poor connection. I had to zip up my files and let file manager uncompressed them. For downloading, I found it quicker to use cpanel > backup download a home directory, and uncompressed on my computer. On cable I still zip large amounts of files for upload as its much quicker.
Kaula
I wouldnt think its my ISP because when It does happen, I'm still able to browse/ping sites and talk on IRC. I did'nt know I could unzip things on the server, thatll fix my problem though, thanks!
Madmanmcp
I wouldnt think its my ISP because when It does happen, I'm still able to browse/ping sites and talk on IRC. Maybe thats the problem, the other applications are using all the bandwidth and the ftp program wants it all. Try doing the upload all by itself. TCH-Don
To unzip on the server use file manager, click on the file name and on the right select extract.
stevesh
I've had exactly the same problem, with multiple FTP programs and ISP's. Never did find the reason for it. I use the same zip - upload - unzip solution as everybody else. Steve Edited September 27, 2006 by stevesh
telcor
What you might do is coordinate with a friend who has different connection to the Internet. Replicate your file-transfer problem. When you have site access issues, have your friend attempt to access your website. If the site is slow for your friend, likely the problem is server side. If it is not slow, the problem likely is with your ISP and/or connection. Problems like this are annoying because they can be quite difficult to narrow to the actual cause. Head Guru
It is possible that our firewall disconnects your session as it "may" have seen a packet it didnt like during the session. I doubt that is the case, but it is possible. When you say "lots" of files, how many files are you talking about?
Kaula
telcor Ive been able to reproduce it from a friends house and from school. Normally happens when I transfer a large amount of files, maybe 200+. though the timing of when it happens seems random along with how long it becomes unaccessible seems to be random. Here is an example of what happens after file transfer fails, http://www.kaulaiscool.com/ftp_example/ftp_example.html its not imporant any longer

If it didn't do anything to your website I would call it a bug in the FTPd server software.
