Mrs. Muddled
Since installing Webroot's Spy Sweeper my computer is operating differently. I posted last night under hardware problems. This morning I was reading their help section and decided to click on tech help in order to find out why my f-secure is not cooperating with Spy Sweeper and why the computer is crashing when the other user attempts to log off. As soon as I clicked on the tech help I got the big alert that IEXPLORE.EXE was trying to access the computer and did I want to allow it. I must have clicked on no a dozen times - it kept popping back up. I checked the file on Firefox. Wow! I'm not the first person who's got this. Obviously there is a great deal of controversy as to what exactly this file is. Spy Sweeper is confirming constantly that I have no spyware. The tech who checked my computer a few days ago said it is clean. I ran a search to see where on my computer IEXPLORE.EXE shows up. This is what I got - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nan...STHISAVIRUS.jpg What should I be doing here? I feel like I'm in over my head. Edit: TCH-Bruce - converted image to link. cajunman4life
Not to worry, IEXPLORE.exe is the executable (program) name for Microsoft Internet Explorer. I'm assuming that when you clicked "Tech Help" it attempted to open a web page in IE.
Madmanmcp
IExplorer is Internet Explorer and it wants to connect to the Internet...thats what a web browser is supposed to do. Usually when you click on help it opens a web browser and takes you to the programs web site to get the "help" you need. Its doing exactly what you told it to do. Why is there so much alarm on the net when you do a search on the program? It is apparent that it acts like a worm or virus on a lot of computers! Thank you for your answer. I really appreciate it. TCH-JimE
Hello, As above, this is nothing to worry about. If you want to see it in action, goto start > run and type in: iexplore.exe -> Gives Internet Explorer winword -> Gives Microsoft Word (if installed) excel -> Gives Microsoft Excel (if installed) notepad -> Gives Microsoft Notepad (thoose are actually really handy ones to know in my opinion) Many people are alarmed when anything flashes up telling them "something could be wrong" or something similar. The best thing to do is to cancel it and find out more, and ask around. Not everything is as bad as it may seem! JimE
Madmanmcp
As soon as I clicked on the tech help I got the big alert that IEXPLORE.EXE was trying to access the computer and did I want to allow it. Why is there so much alarm on the net when you do a search on the program? This was caused by the New Program you installed, it was "protecting" you. What these programs are designed to do is to alert you when something suspicious is being done ( a program trying to access your computer). Now in my opinion this is a poorly written program if it doesn't know that Internet Explorer was initiated by itself and warns you of a problem. What it wants you to do is to is help it "learn" what are good programs are what are bad ones and the next time IE starts it will "remember" and automatically let it do its thing. So you answer the question (allow access) and it will remember this anser next time and not display this message again for that program. But you will have this happen on similar programs and will have to decide whether its a good or bad program. It is apparent that it acts like a worm or virus on a lot of computers! Its doing what it was supposed to do, you installed it for this exact purpose. to protect you from suspicious activity.
