Database Driven Website

Recommended Posts

Hi all hope all is well with you TCH fiends.

Anyway,

I have been running an online community for many years now using IPB, so obviously by now I have learned about MySQL and PHP, that is NOT to say I can code PHP or could create my very own SQL commands and execute them, basically I am saying I have used them I suppose.

Anyway thats digressing, my point is that my community has been steadily getting bigger and bigger for many a year now. Every so often I upgrade my site to provide a new feature for my members which keeps them coming back... i.e. I installed OSCommerce to provide the users of my music based community a chance to sell their own CDs to other members etc... I also installed Jamroom which allows users to upload their own tracks to allow streaming and downloading by other users etc..

I have ALWAYS wanted something bigger and better though. I want to provide the members with a site which is driven by a large database consisting of artists, production studios, sound engineers, record labels and promoters all around the UK. I want basically to allow people who sign up (and maybe pay a small lifetime membership fee) to be able to search for people local to them and send them messages via the site (keeping the emails hidden) etc, and to be able to search by person type (i.e. promoter, artist etc), location etc etc.

Is there currently any (preferably) open source software that provides this type of capabilities, or is it more a case of having to develop the site from scratch?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

OJB

Take a look at this site: OpenSource CMS for some possible software. Can't recommend one specifically, sorry, but if you look through the offerings, you may find one that suit and best of all, you can test it out before downloading and installing!! Very cool site!

however, it is not really a CMS i am looking to implement and none of those really satisfied my needs, i do really appreciate the time though, thanks alot for that...

I am gonna keep looking and hopefull someone can point me in the right direction

Would a system built around a message board work for you? You could make a board where you could enter artists, production studios, sound engineers, record labels and promoters and their contact info then hide that board from every one except those you want to see. They could then contact each other using the pm system.

SMF (available in Fantistico) is an open source product that would do that very well. Just an idea for you to mull over.

thats a good suggestion

i can see how it would work, having used IPB for years, set up individual user groups etc

but i really want something which isnt reliant on a forum because that could constrain what could be done with the site... if it was completely independent of forum software it would mean it is much more manipulable (is that a word) into what I want it to be... i would be able to add whatever fields to whatever tables i want etc

sorry if it seems i am fussy or what not, i do appreciate people thinking of things on my behalf...

cheers people. maybe my best solution would be to pay for the development of the site by a professional

are there any developers here who would be willing to develop my site for me.. of course i would pay depending on the fee requested?
