kfordham281
I'm in the process of developing a new website and will do the majority of it live on a domain. My question is, how do I prevent the site from "going live" while it's still in development? Can I just passsword protect the public_html folder? Or is there another way? Thanks! TCH-Bruce
Put up an "Updating" index.html page with no links to anywhere else on the site. Rename the index file for the site something else to test like index_new.html.
kfordham281
Will that prevent it from being crawled by the search engines? That was perhaps my main concern; though I forgot to mention that...doh!
TCH-Don
If it is a new site there will be no links to others pages for search engines to follow.
kfordham281
Makes sense; thanks!
Deverill
After you get your site established, however, don't use this trick because the search engines will come by, see the pages are gone, and possibly remove you from the listings. (And for anyone else reading this considering a "temporary updating page").
