salguod Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 Hello, I'm new to TCH and getting my Moveable Type based site transfered over from my old host. I had tried several FTP packages with them and the only one I was able to use to back up my entire site without disconnecting was WinSCP. Well, I didn't know this when I settled on it, but it's a secure FTP package and TCH doesn't support that on their shared servers. So I need new FTP software. What are you using with TCH reliably? I'd prefer free-ware, but if I had to pay a bit I suppose I would. Thanks, Quote
TCH-Tim Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 I use FileZilla. Absolutely free. It doesn't always make it through a long list of file transfers without disconnecting, but it's very good at picking up where it left off. Does your old host use cPanel? If it does, you could open a TCH Help Desk ticket and ask them to transfer your site from your old host to TCH. Quote
salguod Posted April 19, 2006 Author Posted April 19, 2006 Thanks for the tip. Nope, no cPanel on the old host. Would make my life easier, but I've gotta re-installeverything from scratch. Quote
Samrc Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 I use WSFTP at work, CoreFTP Lite (free) at home. EDITED...At home I now use CuteFTP Pro, paid program Quote
sdempsey Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 I use WSFTP at work, CoreFTP Lite (free) at home. I use WSFTP also. Get it from www.ipswitch.com. It may not be free but it performs extremely well and can do nifty things like recursive file permissions updates which save a lot of time. Get the evaluation version first & see what you think Quote
salguod Posted April 19, 2006 Author Posted April 19, 2006 I used WSFTP when I first started on the web, but found that it wasn't real stable. That was 2+ years ago, however. I'm also begining to wonder it the trouble wasn't my FTP program but my host! Quote
TCH-Tim Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 Don't rule out your ISP either. I have hiccups in my cable all the time. Quote
TCH-Don Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 Of all the ones I tried when on a dial-up Core FTP lite was the only one for me that did not stop with a large amount of files. Quote
salguod Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 At download.com, WSFTP got 5 stars from the editors but only 3 from the readers (16 votes). Several readers complained of instability. Core FTP LE got 4 / 4.5 stars between editors and readers (247 votes), SmartFTP got 5/4 (200 votes). SmartFTP was downloaded 9.5 million times, Core FTP about a half a million. Yes, I'm overly analytical. I'm going to try SmartFTP. Thanks, Quote
j2k4b Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Filezilla is awesome, but CoreFTP would be my second pick. Whatever you pick at least you have my support. Quote
makaveli Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 ACEFTP, i dont know where i got a free version ages ago, but i like it Quote
TCH-Tim Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Thomas took some time and compiled a nice collection of FTP programs, login tips, tutorials, and FTP codes. It's worth checking out. Link Quote
Pendragon Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 I am looking for one that will upload a file or files on a schedule, and of course, I want it to be free. I have a weather station at home and ran a script to parse it's data file and post it to the website when I was doing my own hosting, but since I moved to TCH, I've let it languish for lack of a way to get the datafile to the server. Quote
abinidi Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 I'm not an expert here, but it seems that you should write a PHP script that uploads the file to the server. Then you would use cPanel to create a cron job to execute the script at a specific interval. Shouldn't be too hard. Maybe somebody can give you some more specific help if you need it. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 Where is the file you are wanting to upload? If it's on your PC then CuteFTP has a way where you can script an FTP session. Once that is done, using Windows XP scheduler you schedule the session for what ever time of day you want it to run. Quote
Samrc Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Don't rule out your ISP either. I have hiccups in my cable all the time. Oh yea....definitely agree with this one! If it is not my ISP, it is my cable company "tweaking things" near me.... Quote
davehickey Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 My favourite program hasn't been mentioned yet, probably because FTP is only a small part of what it can do. It is called Total Commander and it can be found at http://www.ghisler.com/ As well as FTP, it is a complete file manager with some really neat features. It is shareware and costs US$34. (It is fully functional, with just a nag screen at startup). An earlier version of this was the first shareware program that I ever actually paid money for, because it really is worth it! Quote
TCH-Don Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Dave I bought it when it was called windows commander for win 3.11 And I use it every day Quote
davehickey Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Dave I bought it when it was called windows commanderfor win 3.11 And I use it every day Well that beats me - Windows Commander for Win 95 Quote
surefire Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I don't know why, but lately FileZilla has been giving be headaches. Just having it open slows down everything on my machine... which admitedly is a few years old and overwhelmed by the amount of high end software I've packed onto it. But I want to mention that I tried FireFTP extension for Firefox and it transfers files with no visible detrimental memory hit. I miss some of the functionality that Filezilla had... but it seems to be a memory hog. I will most likely purchase a license for one of the other FTP clients mentioned in this thread... but I will miss FileZilla. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I use the FireFTP extension. Since the browser is open 80% of the day anyway. When I don't use the extension I use a registered version of CuteFTP. Been using it for years without any problems. Quote
carbonize Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I personally use Filezilla but I highly recommend FlashFXP. It is a very powerful (but not free) FTP client. It even lets you edit files on the server from within the program. Something text editors do but few FTP clients. I use Fire FTP at work but now they have gone and blocked my access to FTP which is almost annoying as the fact the added my domain to the banned list. Quote
Deverill Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I use Filezilla on my usb drive, which is pretty rare, but haven't noticed any problems with it - probably because of the little use I give it. Most of my web work is done on Linux and I use gnu ftp there and it works very well. I'm not sure if they have a Windows version and it's too close to 5:00 to look but it may be worth a peek. Quote
carbonize Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 After an afternoon of trying to back up my website only to have Filezilla keep failing I just turned off compressionin Filezilla and it seems to have fixed the issue. I now have it set to only use compression for directory listings. Quote
