natimage Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 Hello, I'm just wondering how to distinguish between whether or not someone is just looking through lots of my website or snatching content. I've been reading some of the posts and realized I do not know how to tell. I've had several individual IPs hit many of my pages...but I'm thinking I should see that as a good thing. Can someone tell me how to figure out when it's a bad thing??? And...I had two weird "browsers" hit my site according to Awstats: NPBot and Quepasacreep. Should I worry about either of these? Thanks, Tracy Quote
boxturt Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 NPbot- NameProtect® is a Digital Brand Protection company that provides a comprehensive suite of trademark research, trademark watching and advanced online brand monitoring services that assist trademark professionals in meeting the evolving Intellectual Property challenges of the digital era. Quepasacreep - Doesn't sound so great does it? Check this thread: http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum11/1880.htm Quote
SEO Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 I'm just wondering how to distinguish between whether or not someone is just looking through lots of my website or snatching content. You can not tell the difference from you logs, it just tells you they were there. Can someone tell me how to figure out when it is a bad thing??? Do not get paranoid about visits, it is a good thing. The more the better, sure their will be individuals (and robots) that 'see' you that you would prefer not but when you put something in the public domain.... you are asking for 'views'. There are ways to block specific IP address, robots, etc. using your .htaccess file... but truly, I would not worry about it. Quepasacreep is Latin America search engine spider. NPBot is from nameprotect.com, trademark research company. Quote
SEO Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 Sorry, did not see boxturt reply. I am not convinced that NPBot is all that bad. Think about it, they are out looking for individuals who have pirated copywritten material. Why is that bad? Be careful reading threads in Web Master World... not all the information is accurate (and some is downright inaccurate). Quote
natimage Posted June 19, 2003 Author Posted June 19, 2003 OK...I will try to avoid my instincts to be paranoid. I do know that the majority of the time they are wrong. I still think I'm going to make use of the code that Andy provided in that "Teleport Pro" discussion a while back...well...once I get my site rebuilt. Anyway...thanks for putting my paranoid little mind at ease. Tracy Quote
KevinW Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 if you are concerned about someone "stealing" your images - then you need to take a different approach. virtually all major photo image editing programs (Photoshop, Photoimpact, etc) now come with an ability to record an invisible digitial "signature" that identifies the image as yours. No matter how much the image is cropped or edited or resized, the digital signature will remain. -kw Quote
