I create a link to my Resume. If the person has Word it will open it. I want to create two Hyperlinks one that if the person clicks they can view it and another if they click it will prompt them for a download. The books that I have read all seem to say if the person has they associating program it will open for viewing.

Thanks!

Maybe a solution would be to create a self-extracting zip file. The user's computer wouldn't immediately recognize it as a Word file and would be prompted to open or save.

Once downloaded, they could click the file and it would open in Word.

That's my 2 cents. Maybe only worth one.

Well I was going to tell you to go here:

http://facciolli.com/Resume.html

And click the first test link. But it will ask you for a UN/PW......? Gee how did that happen? How can I change that? I just created the folder inwhich that doc file resides and did not assign it any permissions to the best of my knowledge.....

Well....what I would do is just put a comment beside the link saying to right click on the file to save it. I created a link on a new page with a .doc extension, and when I clicked on it I got the option to open it or save it. There was a check box there for always asking about that type of file....

I also clicked on the link you provided and got the same result......

The page opened fine for me.

Did you see my last suggestion?

Reading it now. also so you saw my resume without any problem? If I zip and someone has winzip will it attempt to extract or DL.

imadsurfer,

Posted a pic on your site. I thought about what you said but I would like to try to make it as "easy" as possible and that way it looks like I know what im doing if I can get it to work that way. Meaning everyone (well almost) everyone knows the right click thingy.

ALSO (i just reread the above) I do come across fairly strong and blunt. Please do not take this the wrong way IO appreciate the help.

OK Test 2 is now zip file. Excellent it appears to prompt me for the DL. Thanks people. In the next week or so you may see me here begging for help as I am currently looking for a new job and want to rely on my webpage.

Thanks again.

Aknot,

That is one way to deal with it, but then again, if somebody doesn't have WinZip it could be frustrating for them. I know everybody in this day and age should have it, but they don't. I agree with what surefire said about making the self extracting zip file. That would kill both stones....umm..birds.....whatever.... lol

What version of FP do you use?

BTW, I saw the pic you posted....thanks for visiting the site...I'm trying to get some traffic to it...

Uh....thats what I get for "selective" reading. You know only reading the parts that I think I know what the person writing is saying........ Nerd

What is the best way to make a self extracting? I believe A LONG time ago I did this for something but the program eludes me. do you have a recommendation.

FP 2002 BTW.

I also haven't done it in a while but should be an option for most zip software (Winzip etc.)

Sorry, I don't have time right this second to test.

Open the Zip file you want to make self extracting. Then in the "Action" Menu choose "Make .exe" and follow the prompts. I would leave the "Default Unzip to" line blank as this gives the user the option to choose where they want to save the file.

The reason I was asking about what version of FP you use is because in 2002 there is the option to "Insert" "File" and then when they click on your resume it would open in their browser. Just a thought...

Just to muddy the waters further... it would be VERY professional to have an adobe acrobat version available too.

AAAAAHHHHHH.

When My wife views it from her office it promts her (when viewing) to enter a UN/PW. She can hit "X" and it will view. errrrrr.

 Adobe Acrobat is one of the easiest methods to make something available online. PLUS it opens it the person does or doesn't have the program used to set up the file. There are methods to make Adobe files on line, if you don't own Adobe Acrobat, although to get the program is the best method I've found. To do it, simply upload the Adobe file to your site and make a link on your page. When the link is clicked, the file will open, OR they can download it. At least it works that way for me. Good luck.

Got the Adobe working fine. The Word Document when you click the view button prompts the viewer for a username/password. I even moved the document to the root of facciolli.com. You can "X" out and recieve the same results but it does not convey professionalism....
