1) http://www.techautos.com

2) TechAutos

3) TechAutos is a site that covers automotive and technological (computing, etc.) interests - important news from each field is posted on the home page, along with special content articles and more, and the forums are open for members to ask questions, make comments, etc.

4) TCH link is in the footer of the site - visible while viewing any page on the site.

5) Any ideas on search engine optimization would be appreciated very much - I'm working to get metatags, etc. to work with PHPNuke, so that should be up soon.

Thanks.

Wow... your home page really needs cleaning up. :huh:

You have multiple body tags.

You have multiple head tags.

You have multiple title tags.

Your have multiple table problems.

Sorry... but you really need to clean up your html before I can look closer. These errors will also prevent spiders from indexing your site.

Let me know when you are ready for round two... in my brief look I am sure to give you some good suggestions.

Ok, I think by now most of the issues have been fixed up on the site.

But still only 17 members in 6 months of operation :(

Starting to think of a revamp now....

Anyway, any other ideas?

Thanks :)

It is a fine looking site... do not get discouraged.

If you build it, they will come. Well, in the realm, if you build it (and optimize it), they will find it!

Where you stand:

You are in the Google index Thumbs Up

PageRank = 5 (respectable :) )

Number of relevant backlinks: 177

What to do:

1. First and foremost, you need to figure out what the best keyword phrase or phrases are. This is critical and can take a serious amount of research/time. Use resources such as Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/). Do searches on google for various phrases looking at the number of pages within the index for that phrase, compare the theme/content of the pages that appear to your own, review competitor sites, etc.

Only after you determine the best phrase can you truly optimize. Having determined the best phrase:

<title>Main Keyword Phrase First ... TechAutos</title>

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">

[remove] <META HTTP-EQUIV="EXPIRES" CONTENT="0">

<META NAME="RESOURCE-TYPE" CONTENT="DOCUMENT">

<META NAME="DISTRIBUTION" CONTENT="GLOBAL">

<META NAME="AUTHOR" CONTENT="TechAutos">

<META NAME="COPYRIGHT" CONTENT="Copyright © 2003 by TechAutos">

Way, way too many and irrelevant words (e.g. news). Narrow this way down and only include the most relevant phrases. List them in order of importance (i.e. the main keyword phrase first).]<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="News, news, New, new, Technology, technology, Headlines, headlines, Nuke, nuke, PHP-Nuke, phpnuke, php-nuke, Geek, geek, Geeks, geeks, Hacker, hacker, Hackers, hackers, Linux, linux, Windows, windows, Software, software, Download, download, Downloads, downloads, Free, FREE, free, Community, community, MP3, mp3, Forum, forum, Forums, forums, Bulletin, bulletin, Board, board, Boards, boards, PHP, php, Survey, survey, Kernel, kernel, Comment, comment, Comments, comments, Portal, portal, ODP, odp, Open, open, Open Source, OpenSource, Opensource, opensource, open source, Free Software, FreeSoftware, Freesoftware, free software, GNU, gnu, GPL, gpl, License, license, Unix, UNIX, *nix, unix, MySQL, mysql, SQL, sql, Database, DataBase, Blogs, blogs, Blog, blog, database, Mandrake, mandrake, Red Hat, RedHat, red hat, Slackware, slackware, SUSE, SuSE, suse, Debian, debian, Gnome, GNOME, gnome, Kde, KDE, kde, Enlightenment, enlightenment, Interactive, interactive, Programming, programming, Extreme, extreme, Game, game, Games, games, Web Site, web site, Weblog, WebLog, weblog, Guru, GURU, guru, Oracle, oracle, db2, DB2, odbc, ODBC, plugin, plugins, Plugin, Plugins">

<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT=">Main Keyword Phrase First ...The Tech and Auto Enthusiast Site">

[remove] <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW">

[remove] <META NAME="REVISIT-AFTER" CONTENT="1 DAYS">

<META NAME="RATING" CONTENT="GENERAL">

<META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="PHP-Nuke 6.5 - Copyright 2003 by phpnuke.org">

You need to set alt tags on all you images - be descriptive. Width and Height values would be wise too.

Oh.... I just found multiple <body>, <head> and <title> tags :(

Around line 40:

><body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"><HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>layout-head</TITLE>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
</HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR=#FFFFFF leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">

This is bad... you have to clean these up.

I would almost consider reducing the size of you index page. There is a lot there and from an optimization point of view it might be better to narrow it down to less content. I would have to spend more time considering all aspects of the site to give you more concrete suggestions. Address the ones that I have given and then feel free to come back with any specific questions/ideas.

Again, it is a very nice site. Your traffic problem stems from the fact that those interested are not 'seeing' it. When it is positioned correctly (i.e. ranked well for the correct phrases), your site's popularity will grow. You have a great niche... how many car enthusiasts are there? :(

Ok thanks for the input - I'm looking into it now :)

I think the first thing I'll fix up will be the meta keywords - that whole list is what PHP-Nuke dumps in by default, but I think I know where to change them, so that should be a minor thing to fix.

I'll try to see how much I can do with the HTML inefficiencies - maybe I'll try to find out if other PHP-Nuke users are having similar issues and how to deal with them.

I've been thinking about the appearance of the site - due to the fact that news is not posted daily as of now, it does appear pretty boring. I looked through some of the large tech sites (sites like AnandTech, Tom's Hardware, etc.) and am thinking about how I can adapt some of their styles into PHP-Nuke (designing a custom CMS system for TechAutos is something I'd like to do but don't have time for).

The PR of 5 is pretty cool, but I think the main reason for it is a link on one of the sidebars of one of my friends' sites which is around a PR7 site. Without that link it's around 2 or 3 IIRC.

K, thanks again for the input :D

Ok I worked on cleaning up some of the HTML. The meta tags was a bit of a challenge due to a bug in the PHPNuke 6.5 meta.php - but I fixed that up and now it's fine.

We have a lot more news postings now and a whole lot more hits and bandwidth usage mainly due to linking from forums across the web B), though very few people have registered :huh:

K - any more ideas?

Scott's right, there is still a mess on your page. Here's an example (I removed blank lines and some java script:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

<html>

<head>

<title>TechAutos </title>

<link REL="StyleSheet" HREF="themes/Tutorial/style/style.css" TYPE="text/css">

</head>

<body topmargin="0" leftmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"><html>

<head>

<title>layout-head</title>

As you can see, there are 2 html tags, 2 title tags and 2 head tags. There is no way a spider will respond to search engine optimizations while the page is like this. It is totally unpredictable what a spider will even do with it.

Did you maybe clean it up and forget to upload it?
