angruth Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Hi, We've been hosting with TCH for a while and very happy. Now looking for move to IMAP mail for 3 or 4 of us, but we want to keep 1 years mail at a time (Outlook file gets to around / just over 1GB each by end of the year, then gets archived and a new PST created) Problem is to do it on TCH gets expensive. There are outside solutions which is probably the way we'll go, but just thought I'd post here first - are custom email solutions offered and would the cost be much different ? TIA Quote
TCH-Rob Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 There are no other options that we have available. For something like that, another solution would need to be found. Quote
crippen Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 (Outlook file gets to around / just over 1GB each by end of the year, then gets archived and a new PST created) Hi I'm just curious - what is a PST? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 According to several results in google it means "Personal STore" and is a personal folder (to answer the question, which I first missed ). Not sure it´s correct since I don´t use Outlook. Quote
stevevan Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Welcome to the forums! (Thomas...you are correct.) Quote
Madmanmcp Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I'm a little unsure of what the question is... The PST is the folder format used by Outlook and this file is stored locally on your PC. If you are then backing up this folder and then uploading these files to your web site, then yes it could be expensive. Why not invest (if you don't already have one) in a DVD recorder and burn these files to a DVD. You can keep the years separate on different DVD's and each individuals on different DVD's. For "offsite" storage you can rent a safety deposit box at a bank in a different city. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Welcome to the forum Angruth too. Just being curious, why the move to IMAP? Jimuni Quote
angruth Posted February 16, 2006 Author Posted February 16, 2006 (edited) Thanks for all the replies everyone! If I knew there was going to be this many hellos, I'd have brought a bottle PST - yes, it's the extension for the Outlook data file. (Want to stay with OUtlook for now because of the calendar (aka surrogate memory) integration.) Want to move to IMAP so the mail on my notebook, desktop and web are sync'd (we all do a lot of international travelling). Guess I'll give Fastmail a go then, but appreciate the replies! TCH-JimE Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Hi, You could always set your outlook not to download the email from the server. That is you would download a copy to your hard drive but leave the message on thte server for X number of days (think you can do forever) so you download it onto multiple machines. Then say once every X months just download it to a PST and if need be, distrubute the PST to all machines, that way you are always in sync with your mail! Just a thought anyway! Jimuni Quote
