kscearce
Ok, I'm not having a good life here (don't ask - the story's too boring)...anyway, I thought I would play with trying to get my Error pages working so that if someone visits my website and gets that lovely error, they can click on my header and go back to my home page. I use Front Page and I've tried editing the htaccess file. Does it matter where I put the code lines in file? I've followed all the great tips in the forum topics and the help topics, but there's something I'm not doing right! GRRR I've tried using the following - I couldn't get any of them to work when I typed in a nonexistent page in the URL box. ErrorDocument 400 /www.monicaburns.com/errors/400.htm ErrorDocument 400 /www/errors/400.htm ErrorDocument 400 http://www.monicaburns.com/errors/400.htm Anyone have any suggestions for the code-challenged?? Monica Here's what the code looks like in my htaccess file. # -FrontPage- IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti* SecFilterEngine Off <Limit GET POST> order deny, allow deny from all allow from all </Limit> <Limit PUT DELETE> order deny, allow deny from all </Limit> AuthName www.monicaburns.com AuthUserFile /home/elysseq/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd AuthGroupFile /home/elysseq/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.grp ErrorDocument 400 /www.monicaburns.com/errors/400.htm ErrorDocument 401 /www.monicaburns.com/errors/401.htm ErrorDocument 403 /www.monicaburns.com/errors/403.htm ErrorDocument 404 /www.monicaburns.com/errors/404.htm ErrorDocument 500 /www.monicaburns.com/errors/500.htm
TCH-Thomas
Please try ErrorDocument 404 http://www.your-tch-domain.ext/error404.htm and see if that works.
TCH-Don
Did you try ErrorDocument 404 /errors/404.htm
TCH-Rob
Don't forget, the size of your error pages needs to be 512k for IE to be able to display them instead of the normal error pages.
TCH-Don
http://www.monicaburns.com/errors/400.htm is not there check where you put the files

Ahhh, this might be the problem. The error files are in the right place, they're just not showing up. I guess I need to add more content on the error pages as the largest one of the is only 6K. Thanks!! I'll be back if I have more trouble. Thanks GUYS!! You're the best!! Monica
stapel
If your site has some major divisions or major destination pages, you could provide an "index" with (fully resolved) links to those pages, in addition to the link back to the "home" page. This would help fill up the custom error page and get you up over the Internet-Explorer size limit, as well as making the error page more helpful for your users. Eliz. TCH-Don
I just tried to goto one of your files and its still not there? www.monicaburns.com/errors/404.htm
TCH-Rob
I would do like Eliz said. Say, take your index page and remove all the text not in the purple background and put your error message there. Save it as the error page you are trying to have and it should work. Monica I believe the error pages have to be larger than 512 bytes, not kb. -Steven
TCH-Bruce
I believe 512 bytes is the correct size. The problem I think she is having is the files do not exist in the location she is pointing to.

mostwanted
How do you setup an error page?
TCH-Don
The easy way is to create a page called 404.shtml in your public_html folder. In it at least put a message that the page was not found and a site map. And be sure it is at least 512 bytes.
Kevan
Why "at least 512 bytes" ?
TCH-Tim
Why "at least 512 bytes" ? It's an IE5 thing. Has problems displaying the pages if they are too small.
