mike Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 Hey TCH 'ERS, I have a dell ( older ) with win 98 on it. Every time you reboot it will run configure windows installer when windows loads. Anyone know why that is or how to stop it? Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Hi Mike, something is trying to install itself at bootup and needs the new "Windows Installer". I would check your startup group and see if you see anything there that should not be and remove it. Quote
mike Posted December 31, 2005 Author Posted December 31, 2005 Madman, I found nothing in the startup under programs. I DID find a bunch of trojans that I am trying to get rid of now. Know of any good trojan removers? Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Mike, a lot of times removing a trojan requires different steps. I'll need to check some of my notes to see if I can dig up a generic Trojan removal program for you. In the mean time read these instruction at Symantic, there is a whole section on Win 98. You'll need to edit the win.ini to locate them under the run command. h_tp://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.horse.html Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 I remember CWShredder was a good one awhile back. Download it from here. h_tp://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html Quote
click Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 I would also boot into safe mode and run the scanner at housecall.trendmicro.com. Quote
mike Posted December 31, 2005 Author Posted December 31, 2005 Ok thanks everyone. I have to work downtown this morning and will continue after dinner and keep you posted. thanks again. I think I have cwshredder in my utilities folder now that I think of it. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 I agree, booting into safe mode before attempting detection or removal is your best bet. Some trojans use stealth and can avoid detection and removal. They will have a separate program that runs at bootup to reinstall itself. Trojan Hunter is what I used in the past but I believe it has gone commercial. Download is here. h_tp://www.majorgeeks.com/download1232.html Quote
mike Posted January 1, 2006 Author Posted January 1, 2006 Ok, with the help of "ya'll" and AVG, CWSHREDDER, SPYBOT S&D, ADAWARE SE, the ol' win 98 pc now has a clean bill of health. spyware and adware alone infected 1,067 files. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Glad to hear you got the old clunker running again. Quote
stevevan Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 spyware and adware alone infected 1,067 files. You didn't have AO-hell loaded did you? Glad to hear it's working! Quote
mike Posted January 1, 2006 Author Posted January 1, 2006 Well, I actually put all my votes against AOHELL. ( No to AOL ) But the ol' timer's running again and the ol' boy that runs it is smiling again. That's what its all about. Thanks. Quote
