http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...=ST&f=15&t=2350

the first post says neo and horde are imap clients, so does that mean if i sign up i can check my email using outlooking with imap.****?

sorry for bringing this subject up again, but i just want to eliminate the ambiguity of the post that says imap is not used. thanks.

Okay, just to clear a few things up initially (based on what I read in those threads), here are the protocols involved in all this:

  • Mail Access Protocols
    • POP - downloads email to your PC
    • IMAP - gives you access to your mailbox from a "remote" location. All the mail is stored on the server. Think of it like an email "browser"

    [*]Main Transport Protocols

    • SMTP - Simple Mail Transport Protocol is used to transfer mail between domains. Think of it like the Post Office. It handles the mail from when you drop it in the mail box (i.e. hit the send button) to when it gets to the recipient's mailbox. (this protocol is required for email to work at all)

All that said. I know for a fact that we support POP. We do support IMAP as well, though I don't know off the top of my head if we support it from remote locations (which, considering what the protocol is inteded for, might be a little silly. though if used or implemented improperly it has the potential to be a bandwidth hog). A number of people (myself included, though I don't use it) have installed SquirrelMail in their accounts, which does require IMAP to work. After a quick perusal o the NeoMail site, it seems to require local access to email mailboxes (i.e. neither POP nor IMAP). Horde's email client uses IMAP.

Okay, I just manually logged into the IMAP server for my domain (mail.rayners.org) from my own machine, so it would appear that you would be able to use Outlook and IMAP to check your email.

I tried accessing my TCH mail for my domain with IMAP before and was unable to do so. Gurus -- do we have IMAP access or no? If you say it should work, I'll give it another try.

FWIW, I telnet'd to the IMAP service running on my TCH server

Also, here is a guide on using IMAP and Linux:

I was using Outlook Express.

I even tried using a raw connection like you did and still had no luck, but I'll try again and post the result here.

Worked nice and smooth this time. I have no idea why not before, but anyway it is great now. This will make it much easier to peek at my regular e-mail from my work PC.
