leezard Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Heres the deal, I got offered exclusive content for my site in the form of professional quality, 5-10 minute videos. For those that dont know I run a computer hardware and computer mod site. The videos will be guides and how-to's of computer mods done by the the owner/creator of http://www.thebestcasescenario.com So far I'm using about half of my 10gig of bandwidth per month with an average of 1000 page views a day. but, I dont have any large downloadedable files hosted on TCH. If I make this deal traffic on my site will more than likely skyrocket, the major upside to that, is I'll be able to charge sponsors for add space, but the downside is the high bandwidth use. Is there any way to determine or estimate how much bandwidth I would need/use per month if I had say...15-20 10 MB videos streamed from my site? I would really like to do this since it would put my site on the map..for lack of a better word. There are literally 1,000's of sites that do the exact same thing I do, but this would make my site unique and one of a kind. any info/input would be greatly appreciated. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Hi, Its simple, times the number of videos you think will be streamed by the total size. E.g. I have 3 videos, one is 10 megs big, one is 52 megs big and one is 21 megs big. Total size = 10+52+21 = 83 megs Now say I get a minimum of 1000 unique vistors to my site, and they all watch the videos once, thats a minimum of 83 x 1000 = 83000 megs = 8.3 gigs worth. Now, since vistors may come back more then once and few it several times, your bandwitdh will scorce up big time. E.g. you need loads of bandwidth! Jim Quote
section31 Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 HEH, i'm really suffering. My site has one tiny mysql db and is completely text, I mean no banners or anything else are on that server. My visits are skyrocketing, and I don't know what to do. Too much b/w for me to afford. I wish your b/w rates were a tad cheaper. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 Hi, Make sure that no one is stealing bandwidth Jim Quote
leezard Posted May 29, 2003 Author Posted May 29, 2003 How much traffic do you get? I get about 1200 views a day and i have a TON of images, large database etc, and havent used half of my 10gig of bandwidth Quote
TCH-JimE Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 (edited) Hi, Here goes for may: Unique Vistors 6,670 visits 9,760 Pages 58,342 Hits 656,300 Bandwidth 4.2 Gigs Jim Edited May 29, 2003 by Jimuni Quote
section31 Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 Site is under 1 MB, basically no images just tiny icons. http://torrentlinks.com/stats/june03.html Quote
TCH-Sales Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 Pretty good numbers there! On the bandwidth issue, I'd say just use what has been already said, and then get a little bit more. Always "over-shoot" a little bit, then you shouldn't have to worry about "what if this happens!?" or "what if that happens?" Good rule of thumb. Quote
theladybug Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 Hi I'm new to this and I'm always confused on this. What is Bandwidth??? Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 You are allowed a cretain amount of bandwidth according to the package you signed up for. It is the amount of data that is uploaded to and downloaded from your site. Such as when I goto your site, I am dowloading images by just viewing your site. So if you get a lot of visitors they use up some of your alloted bandwidth. Most site will not have to worry as TCH give a generous amount in each packaqe. Kick Me Quote
