Blank Page After Saving Entries

Hi folks.

I'm having an issue with my MT blogs. After I save my entry, I get a completely blank page. Sure, the entry gets saved and published, but it doesn't return me to the admin screen like it should.

On testing, I found that this problem goes away if you disable the pinging of sites like weblogs.com etc. This problem also happens when there are trackbacks to be sent to other blogs.

So I'm guessing it's an issue with the XML-RPC module. The only way to make MT work "normally" is to disable pinging of other sites when your site is updated and also to not ping any other sites in your individual entries.

I tried disabling the "Launch Background Tasks" in mt.cfg but the problem didn't go away. Instead, the entry would be saved, then I would get the "rebuilding entry" notice, and then again the blank page.

Anyone else faced this problem? Any help is appreciated. I searched all over the Web but haven't found anything helpful.

The sending of trackback pings and weblog notification pings is a two-way communication process. In order for MT to recognize a ping as successful, MT must get a response back from the server being pinged within a certain period of time.

The larger weblog pinging services such as weblogs.com get hammered constantly with ping notifications, and they often don't respond back to the pinging server in time, even though the ping itself was successfully received.

What I suspect is happening is that MT is waiting long enough for the responses to its pings that your browser is timing out, and since it hasn't received any new data to display, you get left with a blank page.

David, I thought of that explanation too. What changed my mind were the following observations:

1) It shows a blank page almost immediately; about 2 seconds later. The timeout is 20 seconds by default.

2) It's not just the sites like weblogs.com; it's also individual blogs that react the same way. Again, the same 2 second blank screen.

It's just weird.

You need to re-upload <MT dir>/tmpl/cms/pinging.tmpl to the server. When you originally uploaded the MT files, that particular one was not successfully uploaded - it is currently a zero byte file. I'd say this would account for the behavior you're seeing. :(
