As long as I've been tracking it, 50-55% of visitors to my site stay less than 30 seconds ;) . Does that suggest my site is junk, and people aren't finding a reason to stay, or is there a technical reason for that kind of percentage?

Most people surfing the web are looking for something very specific and it's a good chance you don't have it. That is no big thing. Your retention stats are actually pretty good. However, another important thing to watch is how many visitors hit favicon. That will tell you that, even if they are in a hurry to find something, they found your site interesting enough to bookmark it or perhaps your site had the info they were looking for.

The duration of a visit can only be computed when a visitor reads two or more pages within a certain period of time. A reader could look at one single page on your site for 6 hours (for example), but if there is not a second page visit to compute the duration of the visit, that particular visit is measured as 0 in the stats. What I would take your stats to indicate is that 50-55% of your visitors are for the most part reading a single page on your site. How long they're reading that page, the stats cannot accurately reflect.

Great answer David and thanks for asking, Steve. More than one of us has wondered that in passing as well.

Thanks for that info David. I've had the same question in my mind but never asked it. That's great to know!

I don't think there is a threshold but just the 25 most hit pages. I have been known to be wrong most of the time though.

So, for a 'trivial' test of your theory if I "hit" one of my pages more than the lowest hit page in my top 25, I should be able to make that page show up in awstats?

It should, after the next update tonight.
