Visiting New York City In November

Hubby and I are going to NYC for a few days in November for a business conference and we both love trying different ethnic restaurants. Are there any TCH family members who live in the area and could give some recommendations?

 

I would prefer places that locals frequent, not touristy spots. We'll be staying near the theater district in Manhattan but we are fine with using the subway to get around. Oh - and we're also not looking for mexican, italian, or chinese restaurants as we have lots of those locally.

There's one place I know you'll love... it's a little jazz club on St. Mark's Place (14th Street) between First and Scond Avenues (or maybe 2nd and 3rd) and they serve very authentic Provencal French. I can't think of the name right now... I'll ask my daughter who lives nearby. It's on the north side of the street... very cute. Also an Israeli place called Rectangles (great middle eastern fare) was on 2nd Ave around 10th St (across from the 2nd Avenue Deli which is another good one), but I think they've moved. You can get great sushi at Gelato (or something like that, it's on 4th Street, also between 1st and 2nd Avenues). These are all in what is considered the Lower East Side or the East Village. Lots of little Polish diners down there too. Great Perogies! In the West Village there's a terriffic Spanish restaurant (great paella, yum!) and a bunch of good places in the West 4th Street area known as Restaurant Row. There's another Restaurant Row near the Broadway theater district. I'm remembering 9th Avenue from around 42nd up to maybe 57th Streets, but I could be wrong. Could be even further west like 10th or 11th avenue. Also great places on the upper West side near Lincoln Center. There's a wonderful dessert place up there that has an outdoor courtyard (may be too cold in November to sit outside) and plays opera music. And a terrific place for mussels on the East side in the fities (near the UN). I'll have to get the names and addresses for you. Give me a couple of days.

The israeli and french restaurants sound wonderful! I bet I'd like the spanish as well although I don't do much in the way of seafood. Pre-shelled shrimp is about my limit. We generally try to find a middle eastern restaurant no matter where we go because there isn't a good one anywhere near here. We had lunch at a little israeli place in Boston last fall that had the best tabouli and hummus I've ever eaten.

The French Jazz Club is called Jules. It's on St Mark's Place (which is East 8th Street), between 1st and 2nd Avenues. The Spanish place is called Sevilla and is on West 4th Street, I think it's between Charles and 11th). Rectangles, the Israeli place, has not reopened in a new location yet as far as I know.

 

And don't forget the Carnegie Deli... it's an experience!
