Andrew Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Okay, I'm having an odd problem. (And I still am unable to access the help desk to submit a ticket, which is why I'm posting here.) I host a coupla domains here, one being whizkid.com. I just moved another domain here -- penguinbooks.com. Here's the weirdness: If I FTP to ftp.penguinbooks.com, I end up looking at whizkid.com stuff. But if I browse to www.penguinbooks.com, I get an 'empty' page -- it's waiting for me to add my content (at least an index.html file). Help! Why does ftp.penguinbooks.com point to the whizkid.com files, and www.penguinbooks.com goes to the proper place? Quote
Sandygrl Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Andrew: I show you as having 4 existing domains in one account plus one NEW reseller account. Actually the reseller account is still pending. So your working Help Desk ID should be the one from the first account. I reset that password and sent you an email with the information. Andrew Posted April 29, 2003 Author Posted April 29, 2003 Lessee... I should have the following domains: kantor.com, whizkid.com, and penguinbooks.com. (I just set up primecuts.com and I'm waiting for the domain registrar transfer.) I also tried to get mannersguy.com transferred, but that didn't work. Oh, and none of them are reseller accounts! I logged into the help desk with the username/pw you e-mailed me, but I honestly have no idea where that username came from. I thought it was "andrewkantor," not "kantora." Oh, to have a single account with all my domains under it! Quote
Sandygrl Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Doh! My mistake . . . The new domain is not a reseller account. I think that whoever did your account setup on primecuts didn't realize that you already had an account. If you want them put together, open a Help Desk ticket. I'd recommend doing the same with the redirect issues you referenced. Sandy Johnson Technical Support Services TotalChoice Hosting Quote
Andrew Posted April 29, 2003 Author Posted April 29, 2003 Okey doke -- I'll go submit a coupla Help Desk tickets. Thanks! (Oh, and just to be sure that my living in Columbus doesn't affect my service from you Michigan folks, I changed my sig to point out that I'm a *transplant*. Please don't hold my geography against me! ;-) Quote
matman Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Keep in mind that the FTP root you end up in depends on what username you log in with, not which hostname you point your FTP client toward. Quote
Andrew Posted April 29, 2003 Author Posted April 29, 2003 [long stare at matman] Serious? 'Cause I have no idea what my username is for penguinbooks.com. THAT might be the problem. Quote
Sandygrl Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Don't worry about the location, Andrew! First of all, Dublin, Ohio -- home of Wendy's -- a good thing since I worked there for quite a few years once upon a time. Secondly, one of my very best friends lives in Columbus. And we have plenty of TCH customers in Ohio (right, Beth?). Sandy Technical Support Services TotalChoice Hosting Quote
matman Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Dig out the "welcome" e-mail you got when you had penguinbooks.com set up at TCH and try loggin in with the username and password in there. I'm pretty sure you'll find you'll end up where you needed to be. You can put your domain name, the IP address, the name of another site on the same server, or the "real" server name (in my case server21.totalchoicehosting.com) in your FTP client as "host" and it makes no difference. The name just gets translated into the IP address anyway. Think of a domain name as being like your name. If I want to call you, I can look up your name in the phone book and find your number, then call you. Or if I already know your phone # I can just call -- don't even really need to know your name. Once you're connected to the server by FTP, the server asks you to login. It knows that a particular login name is for a particular website, and that's how it knows which website root to direct you to. Sort of like that phone call -- I can get connected to your house with just the number, but then I have to ask to speak to you. If I don't ask for the right name, I could end up talking with your dad, mom, wife, kid, whoever. Awesome DNS explanations: DNS glossary Quote
Andrew Posted April 29, 2003 Author Posted April 29, 2003 My problem is that I don't have that welcome e-mail. I don't recall ever getting it, and I didn't think it was odd because I had a lot of trouble transferring the domain. So... I put in a Help Desk ticket asking for a resend, and now I wait. Quote
TCH-Rick Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 You should be fixed up now, Andrew. Drop me a note here if you still have trouble getting in. Quote
