Guest leonardwan Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 Hi, Just a couple of items. Firstly, I am having difficulty using the domain registration link on your website. The URL is http://www.secureserver.net/default.asp?pr...simple&se=&isc= And the error is "Cannot find server or DNS Error". Perhaps it is an issue with location because I am from S.E. Asia. Secondly, I am a seasoned PHP/PERL developer who typically install and customise open source packages that I use. Do you foresee any problems with enabling ssh on my account? Thanks and Regards, Leonard. Quote
SEO Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 That URL resolves for me... it might have been just a temporary problem. I would try again. Quote
TCH-Sales Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 First off, yeah I'd just try signing up at a diffrent time if you got an error. Computers are bound to make mistakes a couple of times.. As far as SSH goes: SSH (Secured Shell) command line prompt is not provided with any of our web hosting plans. Effective 3/13/2003 TCH will only offer SSH to those customers who can show a valid technical reason for needing such. If you are approved, there will be an annual recurring $10 fee to cover the activation and support for the SSH service. taken straight from the help site! Hope that helps! Quote
Guest leonardwan Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 Thanks for the replies. I have tried to access www.secureserver.net for several days at various hours. It is most likely a problem with my ISP. So, thanks for the verification that it is indeed up. As far as SSH goes, I would really like to work in a shell environment as it makes troubleshooting so much easier and I would like to ensure that I will have access to one before signing up. Thanks and Regard, Leonard. Quote
Guest leonardwan Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 Hi again, Is there a more appropriate place to get an answer for my question? Rgds, - Leonard. Quote
matman Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 Perhaps you could try providing a more elaborate technical reason why you need SSH access. Quote
Guest leonardwan Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 That's a good suggestion. I should be more specific. Well, off the top of my head, I find it much more efficient to debug especially Perl scripts and mySQL queries from shell. The error messages via the web browser is often less useful. Also, in a shell, I can test a script, without handling output to the browser - reducing the possibilities, and see the error as it is. I am thinking of developing a dynamic website for family and friends to communicate and interact, or to customise an open source package. I am expecting it will be fairly complex and I think that developing without a shell will make it even more challenging. There is also the hassle of trying to emulate the webhost environment locally and the need to make platform specific changes just before uploading the site so that it will work (hopefully). Of less importance is a personal preference for the usage of vi ... possibly because I can type a lot faster than I can click. Looking at what I have said above. I guess I would probably will survive without ssh. But it would make life much easier for me. Regards, - Leonard. Quote
matman Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 IF you don't get approved for an SSH account, I would suggest using the "run SQL statement" feature in phpMyAdmin to test MySQL queries. It runs them just like at a prompt and gives you the raw MySQL response (rows affected, returns a rowset, or an error message). You can either paste your statement into the web interface or point it to the path of a file on your machine containing the query. As for Perl, not sure what to tell you there. Shell definitely has its advantages for Perl, and it is also habit-forming! Quote
Guest leonardwan Posted April 28, 2003 Posted April 28, 2003 Thanks for all the responses (both suggestions and advice) so far. Although I did not get a straight answer, being an ex-sysadmin, I can understand the reluctance. Yet, old habits die hard and it isn't surprising that shell remains in my veins till this day. I have given it some thought over the last few days and I have decided that I have heard enough good things about TCH to give it a go. Besides, I trust that the 30-day money-back guarantee will back me up. It is hard to believe that I may finally have to give up handy shortcut keys for "intuitive" but (IMHO) "less efficient" point-and-click. Regards, - Leonard. Quote
idallen Posted April 28, 2003 Posted April 28, 2003 O Leonard - don't give up the command line so easily! After 25 years using Unix, the things I want to do just aren't on anyone's GUI menus... :-) Quote
Lianna Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Leonard, As soon as you sign up, go to the helpdesk and enter a ticket with your request and reason for wanting shell access. Because this is a decision made by management, I can't say if you'll be granted access or not. It's not a matter of intentionally trying to evade the question or not give you a straight answer about your request. All requests are made through the helpdesk, evaluated and then management will make the call. So, it isn't our place here on the forums to guess whether your request would be granted. I hope you understand. And yes, 30 money back guarantee. You can't lose to try out TCH! Quote
lwan Posted May 1, 2003 Posted May 1, 2003 Hi, Thanks for the assurance. I have in fact already signed-up a domain, namely 'lwan.org', although there's nothing there yet. Have been feeling my way around and see if I can work around this. If I do find it too troublesome, I shall write in as you have suggested. Thanks. - Leonard. (formerly known as 'leonardwan') Quote
