pompey_john
first I should say that I have searched the net for installation help, and this place seems like the best there is. Is it only available to customers of Total Choice Hosting? I didnt know you guys existed until I started searching for help on MT installation. I have some space at xlan. I got in touch with the admin guy there and he set up three directories; domainname_cgi domainname_html domainname_logs Is that a workable way of running this? I'd rather get it right first time round, nd hopefully encounter no problems later on. Who wouldnt though eh? (he also mentioned something about turning off "UseLocking" in the mt.cfg file.) Sadly, they dont seem to be the best at responding to questions - which is why I am grovelling elsewhere. The installation guides I have found suggest a different structure. So that for one confuses me. I also have a scoop site at xlan - which I suspect is mysql based - but have no idea of any of the mysql details. I really am stuck with this, anyone who can help - please do! As I have the free distro of MT I cant ask them for installation help. But if anyone else can do it, I'll happilly paypal them the money. Sorry again, if this is not in the right place, applicable or appropriate. Thanks john I'm on msn at mulholland_john [at] hotmail.com or can be mailed at johnmulholland [at] fastmail.fm EDIT: I've edited your email address to prevent spam bots from collecting it. TCH-Dick
Welcome to the forums John. Yes this forum is intended for TotalChoice Hosting customers but I'm sure someone here would be willing to provide a little help. Sorry I can't help you much on the MT front as I don't use it. So take a look around and try our search, the answer might already be here. Also feel free to take a look at our Web Hosting Plans, you might see something you like. TCH-Don
Welcome to our forum John There are lots of knowledgeable MT users here and they may be able to help. It may take a while for them to check in. We are known as the blog friendly host
TCH-Don
John, have you looked the other posts in this part of our forum (blogs)? most are the same type of question, about install problems and one of them may give you some ideas. arvind
I'd suggest posting your question to the Movable Type Support Forums located at http://www.movabletype.org/support/ where you are sure to get answers.
TCH-Dick
John take a look at our Movable Type installation instructions. Might not match your setup but could give you a head start.
TCH-Tim
John, Are you talking about "UseNFSSafeLocking"? I don't see "UseLocking" in the mt.cfg. Unless maybe you have some other older version? Either way, you shouldn't turn on the UseNFSSafeLocking unless you specifically need it, so leave it commented out. There's also "NoLocking", which you also shouldn't use unless you need to. I'm not sure what your question on the directories is. Did you already try to install MT and it didn't work? If you have already tried it and it doesn't work, point us to your site and we'll take a look.

pompey_john
Hi, Thanks all for the replies. I'm overwhelmed. The current siutation is this; Within moments of posting to this board, xlan got in contact with me saying they owe me a database and that one of their customers sets up MT blogs for $25. Well, I said sure, put me in touch with her. She replied that did set them up. I replied to her that I was interested,....and I have heard no more. I'm getting very tired and annoyed very quickly with the service I'm getting from xlan. I have no idea what the terms to my hosting are - if I am locked in, in any way. Foremost what is keeping me there is that I have also have a scoop web site. However, that is a shambles at the moment - and I would have no hesitation restarting it. Although I have no idea how to install scoop - which is why I went with xlan, as scoop install came as part of the service. Should I move to TCH, could I get some assistance installing scoop? as well as MT? I'm not a complete computer novice - I have worked as a test analyst for the last eight years, but I am dealing here with technologies I know little about. Sorry for the ramble...am tired and frustrated now John
pompey_john
another update; After reading lots of the forum, and around the site; I have signed up here. I think I have gone for the basic resellet as I have two domains. So once it's all ready to play with I'll have a go at installing MT following the instructions and guides here. If anyone has any experience of scoop, please do get in touch. Looking forward to being able to get up and running! thanks again for all help, info and advice John
youneverknow
Edit: I just reread your post and see that you have spelled it out already. So disregard what follows below except for the WELCOME John, keep in mind that TotalChoiceHosting is primarily a web hosting service. TCH does not give specifics as to web design. That being said, I am sure there are people (TCH Users) that can maybe steer you in the right direction. If you could tell us what your goal is or could point to a site that you would like to emulate that would be a good start. As mentioned above, MT has their own forum and quite a few forum users here use MT. Just give us some specifics on what you want to accomplish as there may be other less stressful ways to do what you want to do. By the way, welcome to TCH (I am just a customer here like most of us and I am sure we could guide you in the right direction) youneverknow Edited February 23, 2005 by youneverknow

Looking forward to being able to get up and running! thanks again for all help, info and advice John <{POST_SNAPBACK}> First - welcome to the Forums and to TCH - good move! I've been a customer for several months and am glad I moved over to TCH (I've used 4 others over the last 5 years). Second - If you're installing MT for the first time it can be a tad daunting but our "Blogs" forum is usually able to straighten out pretty much any question. abinidi
Welcome to TCH and welcome to the forums. I've been a customer here for more than 2 years, and am very happy with the service and the support!! I've never used scoop, so I can't be very helpful there, but I will say that the Help Desk people are very helpful when you need help with things like that. So good luck!! Guest Serpentine
Just remember that the helpdesk cannot provide support with third party applications.
