Zach Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Hi, On my site I have two subdomains, blog.zachrosing.com and photo.zachrosing.com. The photo one sparadically stops working...I get a cannot find server error when I go to it. My main page and the blog one, however, work perfectly fine. I've had other people tell me they have the same problem. I just tried it, and i'm still having this problem. It wasn't working when I tried it last night (around 1am). Any ideas? zach Quote
TCH-JimE Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Hi, Do a tracert to it and see where the "hop stops" Btw do you reside in Europe? Jim Quote
Zach Posted April 13, 2003 Author Posted April 13, 2003 No. I can't even get it to start. It says "unable to resolve target system name photo.zachrosing.com". Can anyone out there access this site? Is anyone having problems getting it to come up? zach Quote
knucklehead Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Looks like Bill rebuilt your DNS zone files about 30 minutes ago. When sites get moved from one server to another sometimes this can happen, after a rebuild of the zone you should be good to rock and roll! Mikey Quote
craigm Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 I have the problem of a deleted subdomain continuing to resolve. Is a rebuild needed in this situation as well? Quote
knucklehead Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Ok.... checking.... oh wait.... I cant help no domain name was left. Let me know. Quote
twowheels Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 I'm having the same problem. My photos.twowheels.us subdomain doesn't work sometimes. A friend had the same problem (he is also on server16) a few days ago. I tried going to his subdomain, and kept getting "Could not locate remote server", which later he mentioned to me that he was having the same problem. I set up all of my pages to point to a subdomain so that if I move files around links to them will still work... now nobody can get to my photos, but it'd work fine if I wasn't using subdomains!!! Quote
twowheels Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 hmmm... must not be a TCH problem... if I SSH into TCH or into my University account and use lynx I can view the subdomain just fine. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Two Wheels, Your subdomain looks fine to me, i would suggest this is most lieky a ISP problem. Jim Quote
adventureran Posted April 24, 2003 Posted April 24, 2003 I am having the same problem and I find it very difficult to believe it is an ISP problem when people from all around the country, using different ISP's cannot see it. Quote
TCH-Sales Posted April 24, 2003 Posted April 24, 2003 Well, leave your domain name and subdomain names so we can check them out. Quote
adventureran Posted April 24, 2003 Posted April 24, 2003 domain = ransplace.com / subdomain = aaron.ransplace.com Quote
TCH-Sales Posted April 24, 2003 Posted April 24, 2003 adventureran, im getting a message that your site has been removed from the server? Quote
adventureran Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 The domain is active. The subdomain is still not working. It will only work as ransplace.com/aaron, not aaron.ransplace.com. Quote
adventureran Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 It didn't work all day yesterday until evening. Right now, it is not working again. This must be a TCH problem. Quote
Lianna Posted April 25, 2003 Posted April 25, 2003 I posted at 11:07am that it is working and it is now 12:20pm and it is still working. If the subdomain will work for some and not others, it eliminates TCH as the problem. Do a tracert to the subdomain and see where it's getting dropped. Quote
adventureran Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 Same result as Zach. Unable to resolve target system name. I guess I don't see how it cannot be a TCH problem. I could understand if only 1 or 2 people couldn't see it. But it's been days now and this is still happening and friends from across the country, all using different ISPs cannot see it - or at least periodically cannot see it. Especially since I'm obviously not the only one having this problem. Quote
knucklehead Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 Ok slow down Mr. Adventureran. I just tried your subdomain from three connections, ran tracerts from three connections and they are all locating and displaying your subdomain just fine. Here are the results of my testing. Afterwards I come to the conclusion that this is NOT on our end. Server: DNS server ns4.coastlandtech.com aaron.ransplace.com internet address = 66.246.85.77 ransplace.com nameserver = ns1.totalchoicehosting.com ransplace.com nameserver = ns2.totalchoicehosting.com ns1.totalchoicehosting.com internet address = 64.246.50.105 ns2.totalchoicehosting.com internet address = 65.254.32.122 ----------------------------------- Server: DNS server ns4.coastlandtech.com Non-authoritative answer: ransplace.com nameserver = ns1.totalchoicehosting.com ransplace.com nameserver = ns2.totalchoicehosting.com ransplace.com origin = ns1.totalchoicehosting.com serial = 1051321856 refresh = 28800 (8H) retry = 7200 (2H) expire = 3600000 (5w6d16h) minimum ttl = 86400 (1D) Authoritative answers can be found from: ransplace.com nameserver = ns1.totalchoicehosting.com ransplace.com nameserver = ns2.totalchoicehosting.com ns1.totalchoicehosting.com internet address = 64.246.50.105 ns2.totalchoicehosting.com internet address = 65.254.32.122 ------------------------------- Also - I ran digs on your subdomain and they were all fine. The only thing I see that you have done wrong, is when your account was upgraded to reseller you didnt change the Nameservers. This might effect this issue, but I doubt it. You should update your Nameservers to NS1.TOTALCHOICEHOSTING.COM and NS2.TOTALCHOICEHOSTING.COM Further please provide more detailed information. It helps me trace down problems. Quote
knucklehead Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 I posted at 11:07am that it is working and it is now 12:20pm and it is still working. If one user can see it but not another how can you assume its our server. Our server is either working or its not. This sounds like one of two things. Routing Issue Lame DNS lookups on the ISP end. knucklehead Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 I am on a roll... If it is our servers why do these ISP's all over the world see the subdomain? http://www.mob.net/~ted/tools/dns.php3?dom...Look+up=Look+up (If I get any cooler, Ice will no longer melt on me) Quote

Ok, so no subdomains will work for me through your servers, however, with other hosts it's no problem. And, I never upgraded to a reseller account. I purchased one from the start and used the information given to me at that time for my nameservers. If they were wrong, then I was provided with incorrect information. Quote

blake Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 i am having the same problems with certain subdomains on my site. i have several: blake.exudate.net (my main page) faq.exudate.net (my faq) gallery.exudate.net (my photo gallery) guests.exudate.net (my guestbook) i have never once had a problem with the 'blake' or 'faq' subdomain, but i have very little luck with 'gallery' and 'guests' from home (the folders DO work when not using the subdomains). when i try from work, it works perfectly fine every time. i used the DNS Lookup Utility i saw mentioned and all seemed fine. the problem only started recently with the subdomains not working right - only very seldom do the 'gallery' and 'guests' subdomains work (usually late at night) but ONLY from my HOME do i have this problem. the error message i get is: Gateway Timeout The following error occurred: A gateway timeout occurred. The server is unreachable. Retry the request. (GATEWAY_TIMEOUT) you can understand my frustration, i'm sure. i understand that the subdomains are working on the TCH end and that it is my isp's problem (shaw.ca broadband) but getting any sort of answer from them is an exercise in frustration on a regular basis. what would you suggest i could do to remedy this problem? i'm willing to communicate with my isp to resolve it, i just have no idea what to approach them with - do you know what i mean? i figure if you could give me some tips on what information i (or they) require they may be inclined to help me rather than insult me and tell me that i'm probably spelling the url wrong. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you. blake Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 i'm sorry, i forgot two other subdomains: mt.exudate.net (movabletype) mail.exudate.net (squirrelmail webmail) the 'mt' subdomain always works, even from home, while the 'mail' subdomain (which i use for access to my email from work, as they do not allow access to the port specified over the corporate network for the webmail you have installed) does not work from home (it works fine from work, as with the 'gallery' and 'guests' subdomains in my last post). Quote
cmuskett Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 I have no problem at all bringing up and see any of your subdomains. Quote
blake Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 as i said in my post, it's only inaccessable from my home - otherwise it seems to work correctly (even from my place of work) i just don't understand how to get the subdomains back up and working from my home...they worked perfectly fine up until about three weeks ago. what could my isp do to prevent me from being able to access my subdomains - and only certain ones at that? TCH-JimE Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Hi, They might not have completed updating there name servers. Drop them a call or an email and point it out to them. All your subdomains work here in the uk Jim Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 blake, all the sub domains work for me, the mt one works, but redirects to blake. Quote
didak Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 HI- I am having a very similar problem to what was discussed here re: MT I have an account on server 77 username wwwcon. I have registered a domain that has in fact propagated: www.blueplanetdivers.org. MT is installed at home/wwwcon/public_html/mt I log into mt thru www.conservancydivers.org I created new blog using www.blueplanetdivers.org in my pathway config When i try to rebuild, i get a "could not locate remote server" msg. Nor can I rebuild. I have a hunch that I am messed up with my blog config, but not sure how. As usual, any and all help much appreciated! Cheers- Dida Quote
LisaJill Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 Dida, In the weblog config for the problematic weblog, what do you have set for your local site path, local site URL, local archive path, and local archive URL? Quote
didak Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 >/home/wwwcons/public_html/ http://www.blueplanetdivers.org/ /home/wwwcons/public_html/mt/archives http://www.blueplanetdivers.org/mt/archives/ thnx Lisa Quote
TCH-Don Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 I am not seeing an mt folder on blueplanetdivers.org did you create the folder in the public_html folder? Quote
didak Posted November 9, 2004 Posted November 9, 2004 That's right-the mt folder is on conservancydivers.org . I do not want to do a second install. Isn't this how MT should work-that I can create multiple blogs with diff URLS on one install? (fyi- have reseller account) Just when I think I'm getting the *teensiest* grip on understanding MT, I'm thown off course again! whee! Dida Quote
didak Posted November 13, 2004 Posted November 13, 2004 So-should i just reinstll MT in the blueplanetdivers domain and be done with this issue?! Thanks- Dida Quote
