What Is Social Life? :)

Slashdot writes (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/31/1350212&from=rss)...

Sammy at Palm Addict writes "A new survey published in the New York Times states that using the internet has seriously cut into our socializing time. We spend less time watching TV and more time using the internet and following up email. 'The survey found that use of the Internet has displaced television watching and a range of other activities. Internet users watch television for one hour and 42 minutes a day, compared with the national average of two hours.'"

Are they trying to tell me I have no social life? :wallbash:

I don´t, but how can they tell?

By the way I remember back in the old days when people said the social lifes were destroyed by television. I guess its just a change of media. :D

I have tv turned on while working on my computer. Does that count as tv time or computer time?

What about when I am cleaning and have the tv on? Not sitting down to watch a full program, but I am listening as I do my chores.

And when I'm on the phone and the tv is on in the background? Is that socializing or tv time?

Today and tomorrow Cable's Scifi channel has another Twilight Zone marathon on! Love it! Some of the best tv ever made!

Have a happy safe new year!

At work I have two monitors on my computer and I run a virtual Desktop with 5 different desktops that have different windows of programs or Browsers running at one time. We also have 6 huge projection screens on the wall in front of us and on one on the right is CNN and the one on the left is the weather channel. Thats 9 hours of both at the same time.

When I get home I am downstairs at my desk at the computer with the TV on beside me.

Thats a lot of both :wallbash:

I wouldn't count watching the TV as socialising time in the first place! Socialising to me means interacting with other people & that surely includes chatting online? Now if I were sitting in a darkened room, cut off from my family & friends, not part of forums or egroups, that would count as being unsociable, but that just doesn't happen :)

My puter sits right next to hubby's, so we talk while we play - does that count as socializing? :)

Of course, I'm contemplating buying World of Warcraft (been playing on hubby's account this past week) so that will make any non-hubby socializing go down quite a bit.

If you ever hope to see the outside of your house again... don't do it! :)

Between keeping people alive (my primary char is a priest), plucking herbs, and mixing my concoctions (I'm also an artisan alchemist), what seems like minutes can easily become hours.

But then again...I play WoW with friends... so is that considered socialising??? :)

Oh absolutely!

My husband & I have been known to MSN messages to each other (his 'puter is upstairs, mine is downstairs), like 'put the coffee on, I'm on my way' :) :P And I do climb out of my chair sometimes - got a committee meeting this evening & going to a tsunami fundraising gig tomorrow night. Hmmm....gonna have to spend extra time here next week to make up

You didn't warn me soon enough! :P I bought it almost two weeks ago but actually haven't been playing tons like hubby does. His main is something like lvl 48 (in less than a month!) and I'm still at 13. My druid is a skinner/leatherworker and hubby's paladin is a miner/blacksmith specializing in armor. He has a 13 hunter that is doing enchanting/engineering which is an absolute riot!

We also play with friends. A guy in St. Louis who used to play EQ with us started a guild with a bunch of his coworkers and friends, and since then two other ex-EQers have joined in so it's alot of fun. :)
