143 Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Ok - I have been hearing tons and tons about blogging lately. Truthfully, I am interested in setting up a piece of my site for blogging (probably on a sub-domain somewhere). I have been reading about them and just can't seem to figure out HOW or WHAT i need to do to start. Most places point me to blogspot, but after reading all that has happened there (which I am not sure of actually), it seems as though I should stay away from that. I don't want a free service with ads, I want to host it myself here at TCH. So I guess my questions are as follows: 1) How do I set up a blog? (I can handle installing things - I just don't know what to install). 2) What is movable type? Is it important to me? I understand that this stuff has probably been covered TONS of times elsewhere, so I guess if anyone knows of a good link that offers some type of tutorial, that would be great as well. Thanks so much in advance TCH family. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 (edited) If you wanna blog, you should. I recently set up Wordpress (wordpress.org) to try it out but personally found no use for it. However on their site they say the installation takes five minutes at the most, and it did. Here are its installation instruction: 1. Make sure your host meets the requirements. Also, have a database ready with proper username and password.2. Unzip the package you downloaded. 3. Open up wp-config-sample.php and fill in your database details. Save and rename the file to wp-config.php. 4. Upload all the files to your webhost 5. Run the installation file. Relative to where you uploaded the files, it'll be in wp-admin/install.php. As for your 2nd question, Movabletype is just another blogscripts. Which to use of the different blogscripts is like anything else, it varies with the person. Personally I found Wordpress easy to install and use...I just have to figure out what to use it for. Edited December 6, 2004 by TCH-Thomas Quote
AlanV Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 1) You find a blogscript you like and install it Common ones are Wordpress, Movable Type, B2/Evolution, etc 2) Just another blogging script I personally would recommend Movable Type because of the multiple author and multiple blog support (at least the version I'm running allows it... the new version might limit authors/blogs for the free license). Just google "blogging scripts" or something to that extent and you'll find a ton of blogging programs to choose from. All you need to do then is install and start blogging Quote
