TCH-Rob Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Effective November 12, 2004, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will institute a new transfer policy for all accredited domain name service providers. The old ICANN policy allowed registrars to deny requests to transfer your domain names to another registrar unless you explicitly confirmed to us your intent to transfer. The new ICANN policy removes that protection. Starting November 12, when your registrar receives a request to transfer your domain name to a new registrar, they will still attempt to contact you to confirm that you authorized the request. However, if you do not respond, or are not able to respond within 5 days, your domain name WILL be transferred. Make sure you lock your domain names for your safety. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Make sure you lock your domain names for your safety. Rob, good info but how does one go about locking their domain? Quote
MikeJ Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 It depends on your registrar. If you have TCH as your registrar (or GoDaddy), there's a simple "Set Locking" button on Manage Domains page. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Thanks Mike. I'll have to check it out. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 Bruce, It is different with each registrar. Hosted here? Try logging on to your account. Click Manage Domains. Select the domain name(s) that you wish to lock. Click Set Locking. In the right side pane, select "Lock" and save your changes Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Thanks Rob. I have 3 domains with GoDaddy and one with Network Solutions. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 (edited) My Network Solutions account was already locked. I have locked the rest of them at GoDaddy. Thanks again for the info! Edited November 10, 2004 by TCH-Bruce Quote
whoahorse Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 I wonder why they have loosened up on this type of security? Is it because so many domains are owned by people that are not using them or aren't on the internet anymore? I have always locked my domains in the past but its a great reminder to domain owners Weezy Quote
MikeJ Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 I wonder why they have loosened up on this type of security? Is it because so many domains are owned by people that are not using them or aren't on the internet anymore? I believe it's largely due to some registrars making it considerably difficult for their customers to transfer to another registrar. Quite frankly, I already know of a couple of domains this will save me a lot of paperwork on to get transferred. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 My domains registered through TCH are locked now. I can not find any info on how to do this at my registrar for my swedish domains though. Please TCH, I beg you, please become registrar for swedish domains too. Quote
bellringr Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 What are the consequences of locking a domain name? Not that I have any plans to move at all because Rock Sign but I'm wondering what happens once it is locked. Quote
MikeJ Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 With most registrars, if your domain is locked, you cannot transfer the domain, nor change the nameservers or contact information for the domain. In order to make those changes, you need to unlock it first. See TCH's domain locking FAQ for TCH registered domains. Quote
bellringr Posted November 10, 2004 Posted November 10, 2004 Gotcha. Basically it ensures only the owner can make changes. I can understand the reasoning behind the change, but this seems to invite more problems than it will solve and will allow unscrupulous people to cause all kinds of mischief. Bad move if you ask me. Not everyone is going to have a wonderful web host to let them know about things like this. Quote
youneverknow Posted November 11, 2004 Posted November 11, 2004 Think of all the web sites out there that have their webmasters no longer running the sites. I know of a few that I set up and they have no idea at all on how to make changes to their sites. I designed their sites and have not heard from them for over 2 years. Maybe they lost my phone number or email address. Youneverknow Quote
Head Guru Posted November 11, 2004 Posted November 11, 2004 I know I own this place. But WOW, these forums just amaze me! Bill Quote
