Suspended For Spam?

I have a question. One of my domains was suspened I was told for Spam abuse. I am completely in the dark about this. It has been 30 minutes or so since I was told this and still haven't heard from anyone in email.

30 minutes isn't that long, but still, I am terribly concerned and want to get this resolved. What could have happened that caused this, and how can I prevent it in the future? Also, is there a phone number I can call to talk to someone about it?

Lots of things could have happened, the most common is having an insecure formail script that spammers can exploit to send e-mail through your account.

the other common one os having forwards to an aol account and not having aol filters set up correctly, this would cause AOL to report any spam forwarded from a TCH account to be tagged as spam.

I did submit a ticket. Just haven't heard from anyone.

I guess I was sort of shocked that it just "happened" and I wasn't emailed about it before the accoutn was suspended. If this hadn't been an email acount I use all the time or a domain i check frequently then I might not have even known it was suspended for quite some time.

Huuum scratch scratch, I would be quite gratefull if one could develop this a bit more :huh:

Any description/example of what is/are exploitable formmail(s) and how to secure it/them would be greatly appreciated :)

I would dread to think that my freshly opened site could be banned just because, by lack of knowledge, I haven't close the door(s) properly. :whip:

TQ in advance

Hi,

The most common formmail script errors I come across are either not defining the domain name - for example

// referers.. domains/ips that you will allow forms to

// reside on.

//$referers = array ('****','www.****');

The problem is that the $referrers is commented out - it should be
// referers.. domains/ips that you will allow forms to

// reside on.

$referers = array ('****','www.****');

The second biggest issue is where you do not define the email address where it can be sent to. If you are using the form to sent mail to you (from the form) then write your email address into the script, so that it can not be modified. Passing the email as a parameter from the form, it just asking for someone to change that parameter and use all sorts of other addresses.

  • 3 weeks later...

i was just suspended for SPAM also....

it seems that the Spam Police are taking a bit of a facist position of shoot first and ask questions later...i have been reading about AOL and its spam alert...according to the Policy herewithin, we could be deemed spammers erroneously and then charged with a 500 dollar admin penalty. This is a perfect example of turning good intention into a 500 pound monster. I disagree with the accusation of sending One email to friends in my address book and having AOL report me as a spammer...I have had to deal with this all day and all i got was a warning....

I am not a spammer and i am very concerned with TCH being so eager to lable one harmless email as spam to the point that they instantly shut me down. 1 email! I can understand spam policies but this is a NAZI apporach....and to reitterate...I am not a spammer but i have already been warned...WHats next? i have to worry about not only a lawsuit against TCH for shutting me down but i have to worry about a 500 dollar fine....what if they were wrong...as in this instance. There must be some oversight board or ADHOC to judge these matters....I strongly disagree and urge other "PAYING" members to force the management to resolve this grey area...this is a slippery slope....and i should know...i was shut down with ONE single email to all of my friends.....not one time have i ever spammed yet it happend to me. TCH is wrong!!!

Please open a support ticket using the help desk link at the top of the page.

The forums are not for one on one support, they are for members to help other members and for TotalChoiceHosting to notify customers of any server issues.

The forums are not monitored 24/7 by the support staff and the forum mods do not have access to the servers and can't provide server level support.

Just to let you know, we have never shut a site down after one spam complaint, we have aslo never charged anyone the $500 penalty, so that pretty much shuts that theory down right there. If youar account got suspended it was suspended for many spam complaints not just one.
