Virtual Imager Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 I installed Windows Update Service Pack 2 and I hate it! It take about ten times as long to boot up and I can't open any programs while it's still booting. My NAV comes up disabled every time I boot and I have to go into NAV options and click OK (even though I don't have to change any settings) to enable it before I check my email. I have it set to come on when Windows starts, but since I installed SP2, it doesn't. The problems I had hoped would be solved (not being able to shut down sometimes) aren't fixed. How do I get this thing off my machine? Or set it so at least NAV is enabled at startup? Why is it taking so much longer to boot? How can I fix that? Why do certain applications refuse to close and keep me from shutting down or going into standby mode? And remember, when replying, there's a gooed chance I'll have no idea whatsoever what you're talking about so try to keep it simple for me! Thanks in advance, VI Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 (edited) I have no answers for most of them, sorry for that, but... 1) Have you run NAV liveupdate to downloaded their sp 2 update (in lack of words)? 2) I think I have read about there being problems with NAV 2003, so have a look here and I think the NAV problems will be solved. stevesh Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 As far as I know, SP2 can be removed like any other program or update. Go to Start - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs and scroll down to Windows XP Service Pack 2 and click on it to remove. If NAV is Norton Anti-Virus, the trouble you're having, as I understand it, is a Norton thing, not a Windows thing. You might check Norton's website. (Or get AVG Anti-Virus Free Version from grisoft.com. Works fine on my SP2'd machine.) Steve Quote

AlanV Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Heh, I know what you're going through. I installed SP2 last Saturday. (should've known better, especially since I'm a CS Major). Uninstalled it Sunday morning after I wasn't able to copy a few MB text file from one folder to another (not enough memory, please close all open applications) I just removed it through Add/Remove Programs, then ran a defrag session. Alternately, you can do Windows Restore to the point before you installed (a restore point is created for the install) Or read the links Madmanmcp posted Quote
TCH-Dick Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 I've had SP2 on all of my PC's since it went public, norton is on two of them f-secure is on another and mcaffee is on another and AVG on the last one and havent had any problems with SP2 Check the sites for the software you are having problems with and see if they have patches to update them. cornfestival Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 VI - I don't know about the home edition of Norton, but I had to download a patch for my corporate edition for sp2. Have you looked into that? Quote

Virtual Imager Posted September 30, 2004 Author Posted September 30, 2004 Thanks everyone for your responses. Well I went to the Symantec site and couldn't find an update that said it was specificallly for SP2, but there was one that their scan said I was missing so I installed that. The problem (Norton coming up disabled on boot up) happened two more times, but not since. My brain hurts from tying to figure out why. I give up. I don't care anymore. It's working and I'm going to just leave it alone and hope it leaves me alone! Boot Up is going faster now too... maybe it just initially had to scan a bunch of stuff to monitor it and now it doesn't have to do that every time... like it's in a kind of cache? I don't know. Again, I don't care... it's booting up in a reasonable amount of time and I'm not pulling my hair out anymore. I'm still having trouble (sometimes, but not always) going into standby or shutting down. It's nothing new... and short of getting a Mac (oh how I wish!) I guess there's not much I can do about it. I'm too chicken to start restoring or removing anything... luckily things seem to be going smoothly right now. If I hit any more bumps I'm going to kidnap Rob and bring him over here to help me! I can't ask my husband, he doesn't know I messed with it to begin with and that's a very good thing! When I first installed SP2 it asked me a bunch of questions about monitoring my anti-virus software, and allowing this or that function in AIM (the first time I opened AIM after the install. I'm not sure I answered those questions correctly. Does anyone know how to sneak in there and look at and/or change those settings? Quote
TCH-Rob Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 If I hit any more bumps I'm going to kidnap Rob and bring him over here to help me! Hey now, dont drag me into this. I use 2K a little, dislike XP. I can help you kick it around though. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 Does anyone know how to sneak in there and look at and/or change those settings? I would have to assume this was your Windows Firewall asking if it was ok for AIM to connect to the Internet or if you want it blocked. The new Windows Firewall now allows you to add or change these settings. Click On My Computer and then start Control Panel, click on Windows Firewall. Now select the Exceptions tab and find the program you wish to check from the list and add or remove the checkmark. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 Thanks, Madman! I think that was exactly what I was looking for. One of the things, anyway. I went in and took AIM off the exceptions list. Did a reboot and opened AIM and I'm not really seeing any difference. It's still connected to the internet (wouldn't be much point if it wasn't). My hope is it will stop those annoying video commercials with sound, but I guess I won't know untill one gets blocked. I think Windows will tell me when it blocks something. Anyhow, muchas gracias! Now, about having Windows SP2 monitor my anti-virus software: How should I have answered that question if I have NAV? How do I check what it's set to do? And how do I change it if it needs to be changed? NAV is enabled and behaving nicely right now... I just don't know what Windows is doing with the new anti-virus component in SP2. Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 You can disable the AV manager under Windows SP 2. It's pretty much useless as what it does is usually done already by most existing AV utilities. It just reminds you when your antivirus patterns are outdated. Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 That is, go to Start, Control Panel, Windows Security Center, and tell them you want to do the monitoring yourself despite their recommendations that it's better for them to do it for you. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 I think I did disable it. I told it (when it asked me) that I have my own software and that I'd manage it myself. I guess that's ok, huh? I was worried that maybe I chose the wrong setting and that's why my NAV was coming up disabled every time I booted. That's no longer a problem, but I'm just wondering now if maybe I should have answered a different way. Sounds like you're saying it doesn't really matter. Edit: OK... wrote this before I saw your second post! Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I've had a computer with NAV on it and SP2 patch as well and it works just fine with the option set to self-monitoring. It shouldn't be a problem if you set that option for the Security Center. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 To check your settings go into Control Panel again and start the Security Center, on the left side click on "Change the way Security Center alerts me". In here you can check or change the settings. Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 What version of NAV are you using? You can find this out by opening your NAV and looking somewhere along the bottom right-hand corner of the program. It should say Norton Antivirus <year>. As someone has suggested earlier, MS does have some issues with a number of applications. What you can do is go to this page - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...ct=windowsxpsp2 that lists the software alongside with their versions that may lose functionality with the usage of SP2. They generally tend to be the next newest software eg NAV 2003 so if you have pretty much the most-updated softwares, you shouldn't have a problem I think. Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I've just noticed I've repeated information from Thomas and Bob when I reread their posts. Sorry. Quote
