Hotlink Protection

One of the characteristics in the hotlink protection script is:

Url to Redirect to:

I am confused, I would assume that the redirect would be a graphic... something to the affect of 'You are not authorized to use this image'. Yet, that would be another image that you would be blocking???

Thinking about this hurts :P

Please relieve the pain.

I turned on hotlink protection on my site. One thing I did was tell it not to block .png files. I have one .png image file that says remote linking forbidden and that still shows up everywhere that someone tries to link. The rest are all blocked.

Turtle:

Devynn solution is perfect. I do not use .png files for my sites. Therefore, I created a graphic regarding un-authorization (e.g. remote linking forbidden) and saved it as a .png (uploaded it).

Then in cPanel, under hotlink remove .png blocking. Now the created image will appear when someone tries to link.

It works perfectly. Again, good logic Devynn.

  • 5 months later...

I have a question on the redirection method. Ok, if you have another picture pulled up, that states its an unauthorised pic. viewing, I guess you could say it serves the bandwidth stealer right. However, this doesn't really save on badwidth. So, is it smart to rediredt to a picture that would still upload? Or is there a way for it to redirect to nothing. so the bandwidth stealer still gets nothing, but we save our bandwidth.

Hi All,

I haven't been on here answering questions in a while, so I hope I'm not rusty. Here goes...

I have a question on the redirection method. Ok, if you have another picture pulled up, that states its an unauthorised pic. viewing, I guess you could say it serves the bandwidth stealer right. I think if you use a very small image for the redirect purposes...you're not really going to see much affect on your bandwidth...I'm definately not an expert on that though!

As for the rest of the conversation, my logic would be this:

Hotlinking Protection keeps people from directly linking to any images. When Hotlinking Protection redirects the offender...it is no longer a "direct" link...maybe...it does kind of hurt to think about. I would think that since the redirect is part of your own site setup, that it would work. I'm going to try it...

Well...I was wrong on the redirect thing! I thought I had come up with another option, but that is not working either. In the meantime, I found that NONE of my photos are showing up now on my site...gotta go work on that.

Tracy :goof:

problem...if I put anything at all in the redirect box, my images don't show up on my site. Urls to allow access includes my site address...it works fine as long as their is nothing in the redirect box...

Do I have something set up wrong??
