Thomas, I don't know much about DVD burners but I have one in the latest machine I bought.

I imagine it is as good as the other ones out there. If I were buying one to put into an existing machine I think I would look for one that could read/write to both DVD + and - formats. I know they are available because the one in my machine is a Sony and can write to both.

If you can't find one that read/writes both formats make sure to get one that is compatible with what ever other equipment you plan to use it in.

I have found in my own experience that the -R format seems to be more compatible with other devices than the +R format.

Go check the reviews on

Look for DVD writers in the menu.

This is the best resource for anything DVD related. I always check this site before advising friends on buying DVD players. The one time I didn't check that site before buying a player, I was undeservedly lucky!

Lite On and NEC both make good burners, Samsung does also but like Bruce said you want a dual format burner (one that does both + and - R/RW) That samsung only does - R/RW.

Also double later DVD burners are comming out now (right on both sides of the DVD) but the media (blank DVD's) isnt cheap, plus its hard to come by

I have a Memorex Dual Format DVD+/DVD- recorder that I got last year. It was easy to install under Win XP and I haven't had any problems with it. Prices on these units are pretty reasonable too. I got mine from Sam's Club ( a warehouse club in the US) for about $150. I know I have seen some of the Sony unites recently for around that price.

I finally bought and installed a Lite On SOHW-812S today.

I forgot to buy empty dvd´s, so i dont know how well it burns dvd´s but i burned a cd, which was fast. :) My old cd-burner burned in 8x and this dvd-burner burns cd in 40x. Nice increase. :) Dont know how fast the dvd burning is yet for natural reasons. :D

Thanks everyone involved. <_>

I have a lite on dvd burner at work and have been very pleased with it.

My cd burner at home is an antique, but keeps on chugging along.....
